Squealing Sound from PC
Squealing Sound from PC
My primary HD recently died, so I installed Win XP on my secondary drive and now I'm getting a squealing sound coming from my PC. My first thought was that I had a fan going out, but that is not the case as I checked each one. I moved a few cables around checking for connection issues or that possibly I had a cable coming in contact with a fan and the squealing has mostly subsided...mostly. Any thoughts what could be causing this problem?
Don't ask me, cause I know nothing! I'm lost in this world of technology and am barely holding my head above water. Thank the Good Lord for LR, otherwise I would have drowned years ago.

Re: Squealing Sound from PC
you can't take the case door off and locate the noise source? start sticking in fingers into the fans till you find it... could it be the fan on the video card or the one in the PSU?
Re: Squealing Sound from PC
Sounds like it could be interferance between cables or a coil capacitor on the motherboard. If it is really high pitched it sounds like some electricity is escaping. Look around the CPU socket and see if one of the coils is the culprit. This is why manufacturers put hot glue on those things, in an attempt to shut them up.
Re: Squealing Sound from PC
Apop, did that and I thought that my fans were good to go, however I was able to locate the noise and it is coming from my PSU fan...at least to my semi deaf ears it appears to be that. I started tapping lightly on my PSU and the audible level of the squeal seemed to bounce around. After about 1 minute it no longer squeals. I have an Antec Neo Power PSU, so can the fan be easily replaced?
I've got another problem popping up now. I'm getting all of these error reports that Microsoft appears to have no solution for...go figure.I'm up to date on all of my MS updates and I'm using the same drivers as I was before my HD crashed. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed.

I've actually had strange sounds from my old power supply at one point. Its not difficult to replace a power supply because there are no drivers involved. However it means you have to redo all the power wire connections, so either memorize them or have someone help you. Also, get the highest wattage PSU you can afford. It seems like PSU fans go bad a lot.
Re: Squealing Sound from PC
Maybe something is vibrating in there? Might be the panels of the PSU. It might even be the electric circuitry of the PSU (I've read that some bad mobo-psu-videocard combos would cause a high pitch whine). Switching the fan shouldn't be a problem. Just get a equivilant sized case fan, pop the PSU open (after unplugging the power source)(this will void your warranty), locate the power connector of the fan, unplug it, and insert your new fan: http://www.bleedinedge.com/guides/psu_f ... an_r2.htmlRazorbacx wrote:Apop, did that and I thought that my fans were good to go, however I was able to locate the noise and it is coming from my PSU fan...at least to my semi deaf ears it appears to be that. sounds like the bearing in the power supply fan is dying. How old is the PS? RMA it if you can, that way you don't void the warranty. Or just replace the fan. Do you have another power supply that you can swap out to be sure that it's the PS?

Do you by any chance have an 8800 series card? And did you have to unplug the PCI-E power connector to do the swap? If so make sure it is seated correctly as the card will "scream" with not enough voltage...Razorbacx wrote:My primary HD recently died, so I installed Win XP on my secondary drive and now I'm getting a squealing sound coming from my PC.
