Hi, well i had generally the idea that making such hardware changes wont work with the same installation. But, researching a bit i found that by using the repair capabilities of the install XP cd this may be possible.
I will just be changing my motherboard from Asus P5b-vm (g965 + jmicron363) to gigabyte p35-ds3 (p35 + gigabyte sata which i believe is again jmicron363). Now i really want to skip the formatting part since i will have to reinstall 3 operating systems plus completely updating XP again and customizing them + programs etc it will take a whole day! So i was thinking since the hardware change is not that terrible (like going from intel to amd) maybe it would work! Has anyone tried it? Any suggestions?
I was thinking actually to first install all the gigabyte drivers on the old system (or at least try) and then swap the motherboards

going from one vendor to another on the same chipset can be done easily, but whole chipsets... I'd personally do a re-install.

Well, normally i would advice someone to reinstall too, but i'm really bored "fixing" xp to my likes again. Basically i will empty all mobo drivers and install the new inf and see how it goes, then try the repair and format is the last last resort! I also found that acronis has a tool to migrate xp backups to new hardware (acronis universal restore) by patching the backup with the new drivers. Well i will try everything, even for a small performance hit i prefer to skip formatting...

Trying all this will take you the whole day anyways. I'm with Apop here, just reinstall everything, it'll save you alot of trouble.

It worked! Well at first it looked like i would have to format.. pretty scary, everything was very messed up,the desktop wouldnt even redraw, but no bsods (i had removed all asus drivers). I was sure i would need to format today morning, but i boot up and works fine,everything recongized and set up! I didnt try to boot to vista or linux but i will be amazed if they work (especially the second, it hardly worked before)

There's a better chance of Linux booting as the Kernel would have been compiled with driver support already........

Better chance of working yes (but i dont really know how to fix it), but booting i doubt it. The problem is it hardly booted before! The disk is connected to the jmicron (gigabyte sata on the new one) IDE controller. Lots of people are having problems with them. Especially that new one they put on p5k SE its not even properly supported except if you manually compile the latest kernel on Ubuntu. Then again you have problems with the bootloaders. But i dont mind reinstalling, besides i only have a couple extra installed and most of them backed up, i only use it for my thesis. I was worrying about XP cause its my main OS and i have worked alot on it.

Imagine that with the old one, when i installed ubuntu or fedora i always had to chroot on it from a live cd to make it bootable (from floppy). Grub is no go.. only LiLo. Now i hope it sees it as jmicron and not gigabyte sata, because otherwise i smell trouble!

Yea it does work i did it once, a few hours before a lanparty, it worked for about a week then i needed to do things that i didnt normally do often and it all went physco then the last straw was using itunes...

But yes it will work, but before i did it i uninstalled all the specific motherboard drivers before i did it.
