Anything special i ought to do for shipping a computer besides the obvious pack it carefully?
For example inside should i remover anything like th cpu heatsink for example?

(ill be moving to scotland in next couple weeks and im shipping my computer over and just want to do everything possible on my end to ensure it gets there fine)

you could spray some of that latex expanding foam in there to make sure nothing moves around.

load the inside with packing peanuts!!! just take them out before you use the computer again

I always remove the heat sink and tie up the power cables so they don't move around and knock off capacitors on the mobo.

what is the importance of removing the heat sink? if it is securely fastened shouldnt it be ok?

The purpose for removing the Heatsink from the Computer is that SH-T Happens. Better safe than sorry

he's got a point, can you imagine the damage from one of those suckers bouncing around inside the case?



P.S. i was joking about spraying foam inside.....really

with the weight of my Tuniq Tower, I certainly wouldn't want it out of my possession with it still attached to the motherboard. One decent drop and I could see it snapping the board and countless other parts within the case while it makes the journey.

I think it would be like putting a few eggs and a rock inside a box and kicking it across the room. Not a pretty picture.

ok, just the chance of them snapping off would cause problems...but wouldnt filling it with packing peanuts solve that problem? As long as you got all of the tiny pieces out you should be ok.

maybe you could fill some plastic baggies with packing peanuts and stick them in there for the shipping

I don't think so , packing peanuts are light, good for stuff thats already in boxes etc, to fil up space in another box. Something as heavy as a sink and fan would likely just slice through the peanuts...again and again.

i would say take out the video card, RAM ,soundcard, or anything else that can be taken off and transport or ship them seperate. it might cost more but my save you the cost of replacing..

Depending on if you can package them in the original boxes that might work, but if not then it just gives the shipping people more chance to throw around and damage your stuff.

I'm with the majority, removing your heatsink should be sufficient, as long as everything else is secure.

For what I spent on my GTX, I'd keep it on my person and away from any movers' hands.

well it survived the move.. in the end didn't really do much except tape a few wires...

btw though... woulding packing peanuts be a bad idea.. aren't those things very staticy..

I would just go with removing the sink (unless it is low-profile and not topheavy). The rest of the system should be ok, but I would either take out the hard drives and transport them myself (width between r/w head and platter is about 1/50 of a hair, bouncing makes things move) or pack them in those nifty padded envelopes to ensure safe transport. I would also stay away from packing peanuts as they love to create STATIC!!!

Indeed, do NOT put packing peanuts inside a computer. They create static, and imagine the amount of juice all of them rubbing around during shipping would create. Then remember it only takes one static charge to kill something.

Peanuts=BAD
