Ok, I am having a HUGE problem with my computer just restarting whenever it feels like it, and also with crashes in programs - especially Firefox and IE - both crash about the same.

I am running Vista 32bit, I turned the overclocking totally off, E6600 cpu, gigabyte 965P-DS3 v3.3 mb, HyperX power supply I won from here a while ago ( thinking maybe the random reboot problem on this? ), 2gb ram,....ask about anything else you would need to know.

I can be surfing even Legits website and all of a suddent the computer reboots. I almost always come down in the morning and am at the welcome screen waiting for my password because it rebooted overnight.

IE crashes A LOT and I tried Firefox and that also crashes! I get errors because of flash, iexplore, someo ther stuff that I cant remember, all the time. Sometimes I close IE when it crashes, and it crashes immediately after trying to open again.

I can use Media PLayer, but sometimes if I have MP open and open a web page, the computer reboots.

I have AVG running and I run spybot, but nothing gets found.

I am thinking of reformatting and reinstalling Vista to see if it happens with a fresh install to determine if it is software or hardware, but I just HATE reinstalling all this stuff so maybe one of you can help

I received these errors within the past 5 minutes or so in IE. the error is first, then the error when I told it to restart the program or just clicked the X.

How many watts is the PSU?

If it isn't your PSU I'm 99% sure you are having RAM errors. I've had bad RAM do exactly what you are explaining. Sometimes the computer would restart other times applications would just close. Download Ultimate Boot CD and run Memtest86+ for 5+ hours. Once you get errors, I think you will, isolate which stick of RAM is bad. Sometimes you can fix this with loosening the timings, using a lower divider so the RAM isn't running as fast, or adding more voltage.

I would say check the RAM too, if that checks out then the PS could be the problem. Just to be sure you might want to run your Hard Drives utility to make sure its ok. If you dont have it, its also on the UBCD.

or just take out all but one stick and run it, if it locks up, try the next stick, if no issues then its other stick. quicker than staring at memtest.

also for giggles, I know you said you're running AVG but but dig around and see if you have Zlob trogan, get the spyhunter trial run it, it wont remove anything unless you buy it, but you will know what files and hex keys need to be removed and you can go nuke them by hand. I have fixed a couple machines in the last week that had it. Nasty little bugger forces explorer into a crash restart loop.

I had the same problems for a while, and contributed them to a bad windows update. Once I reformatted, things worked fine for a few days and then it started crashing again. About an hour spent with Memtest86 and I found that my ram was the culprit. RMA'd it, should be back any day. Put the ram from the server in and it's working fine for about 10 days straight now.

I am downloading the ultimate cd now - will run memtest as soon as I get done checking websites this morning (I have to see if the Nascar race will be on today, you know )

Would be nice if it is just the ram!

Oh I have NEVER overclocked the ram - I manually set it to 2X in BIOS and I could not go over 400mhz for the fsb, so the memory was either underclocked or normal.

btw, you didnt say what kind of ram you had there....

On the laptop, doesnt look like the RAM is bad it is Adata ram I believe, nothing high end or fancy.

3:51:56 on memtest-86 v3.3 and no errors. on pass #4.

Yep 550watt Ultra X-Connect 2

memory is testing fine with memtest 86+ v1.70 so far - 44% through first passs.

ie and firfox having errors would not be the power supply though. I also have errors in other programs.-, just not as frequent as IE. Computer reboots inside of other programs also, or when nothing is going on on the computer.

I hate these types of problems - so hard to figure out I guess the next step is to redo windows on the system (even though I hate doing it) and see what happens. Or should i try another PS first? I dont have one anywhere near as good as this one, maybe a 400w laying around.

I just replace 2 PS units (Antec) on systems that were doing random reboots and sometimes not turning on at all. I thought for sure it was the RAM which turned out to be the case on another system which booted after i pulled on stick(and has been running problem free since).
But you are right those kinds of things are hard to troubleshoot sometimes, so i usually start with the most likely culprit (RAM) and work my way through other tests. the PS isnt that hard as long as you have another one around to try, also i dont know as much as RAM as some of these guys on the Forum, but could the change in the Bios you enacted for the ram be causing the problem? Because it might check out ok in memtest if its good and the bios is causing the problem.

I set everything back to default once I started having th problems. It is on AUTO in BIOS now, so it shouldnt be a setting - or if it is then the MB wuld be frying

Ran spyhunter - no probs. I think spybot checks the same things, but i ran it anyway

I turned off Aero thinking maybe that was causing some problems because vlcplayer doesnt play nice with Aero, havent had an error since turning it off, but we will see by tomorrow I imagine ;)

Oh memtest+ came out with no errors also...

Only got 1 error in IE since turning off aero. I got some other program crashes though, saw some nt.dll errors, some explorer errors *sigh*

rebooted overnight again also

next step is to try and find a PS laying around taht will run this beast - might not be till after the kitchen is done though, since most of my stuff is buried with boxes of food and dishes sitting in front and on it.

Have you tried an alternate web browser like Firefox, Opera, etc...? Make sure you don't have some type of addon for IE that is causing the crash. If you are having issues with Aero have you tried updating your video card drivers to the latest available?

Yep firefox - same crashes

nope - I even manually turned all the crap off in IE - to no avail

Video card is updated with the latest drivers from nvidia's site

still getting reboots and errors, jsut not as many in IE with Aero off it seems. Other programs are still crashing for no reason - trying to get the linuxmce video and the dvd to install it and azureus just closes by itself for no reason every now and again...*sigh*
