The long wait is OVER!!

Post by Gamble »

I bought my final parts from newegg yesterday to complete the computer of my dreams, this is what I ended up with:

*E6750
*Tt Big Typhoon VX
*ASUS P5N32-Plus
*2gb Crucial Ballistix ($65 after rebate)
*Seagate 250gb HD
*Lite-On drive that does everything but wipe its own @$$
*x1950pro 256mb (probably to be upgraded)
*Tt Armor Jr. Case
*850w GameXStream PSU (a little overkill, but SLI 8800s may come into play...)
*22" Dell 1680x1050 monitor
*No sound yet
(Will probably mod the side window for a couple 120mm fans to fit)

I'll post pictures after I build this beast!! I am looking forward to some OC'ing fun.

Ditto. 850 is major overkill, you could have powered that sucker with a 620W Corsair. But nevertheless it will do fine. Enjoy, and I second we need geek porn

I built her yesterday! I used AS Ceramique instead of 5 because I heard it does a tad better job. It was really gooey but people said that using a piece of plastic (in my case sandwich bag) would work to smooth it out. I lapped the bejeesus out of my Big Typhoon VX as well. Should have taken pictures but there was a nice concavity in the middle, but being as I'm not the image of patience I cranked on it with 180 grit for about 45 minutes, then went to town wet sanding it with 600 grit. Ended up smoother than a baby's @$$. I was a little overwhelmed by the number of little dangling connectors, but found directions for them. Half of the CPU power connector was blocked so I only plugged in one of the four-pins. (There were two labeled CPU1 and CPU2, guessing for a dual layout?) Anyways, I still need to hook up the internet so's I can download Microsoft's PowerTools or whatever to update the skins and whatnot. I already gamed on Max Payne 2 for an hour at max settings. No stutters, no fragments or anything, card stayed cool-ish and CPU never even got warm to the touch. I'll work on cable management today, then hopefully post some pictures later this week. There were a couple pretty good ones of me putting it together.

Couple questions:
What are/where can I the diagnostic utilities to test my CPU/Mem/VGA?
How do I use them? (memtest has weird forms and I don't know how to run the files)
Anything else I should check/look at/redo just to make sure my first build stays cookin'?

Memtest88+
Download an iso, burn it to a disk with an appropriate burner, and let it boot form the CD.
Let it run for an overnight sesh.

ORTHOS
Set to small FFT's to stress CPU.
Again let it run for an overnight sesh (like more than 8 hours)

ATItool
Install, and then let the scan for artifacts run.
You can get away with a lot less for this, say, 4 hours is a good time.
Half of the CPU power connector was blocked so I only plugged in one of the four-pins.
That doesn't sound good.

How is that even possible. Good rule of thumb, if it has multiple connectors for power, its best to plug them all in

There were two four-pin connections, with a black plastic cover over one of them, I'm afraid if I plug in the other half it will fry...I'll post a pic of that, too....

That's normal, you can remove the black plastic cover. It's just there for people who only have a 4pin PSU to make sure they don't connect it to the wrong side.

no need for a picture, I've uploaded a similar one. Its for 8pin cpu power. You have the connectors. So Plug them both in. It helps give cleaner power to the CPU. That's good for OCing

Sounds like a great rig..............

As the others said, pull the plastic cover on the CPU power port and plug in both sets of 4 pin cables.........
