Until we see the new GTS offerings with the G92 I would say Yes, the 8800GT is the best bang for the buck. I hear the new GTS will cost a tad over $300, but we'll have to wait until December to be sure.

I would replace the ram with PC6400 ddr2-800.

XFX PVT84JUDF3 GeForce 8600GT Video Card @ Newegg.com now for only 89.99 after 20 dollar rebate. A couple of thoses in SLI would be cheap but uber IMHO

Actually, a pair of 8600GT in SLI would be crap compared to a single 8800GT. Not even close!

DeusEx I've read through the posts. Tell me if I have this right?

This rig is for a friend? His budget was $1000 and you made him go to $1100, correct?
So he can't go any higher, but he wants a good rig for games FOR HIM!

Will he be interested in overclocking the rig, or even let you to do for him? --> This is a VERY important factor when deciding on what parts to get!

It is also too early to count on SLI to boost you high enough in performance. Some games still don't support SLI right away.
