GRUB strikes again

Hello, all.

Unfortunately, I just had my wonderful day ruined by a computer glitch that I cannot fix. The reason pertaining to my inability to fix this problem is that I have a cheap laptop. It is one year old, and has one forty gigabyte hard drive, and room only for windows and files, plus a lot of free space that I do not want to partition to linux. I have an external forty gigabyte hard drive that I installed linux on for the laptop. Unfortunately, the Kubuntu installer moved the Master Boot record to the external drive. It is called a firelite, and, if you do not want this scenario repeated on your machine, do not get a firelite, that is, if they are still sold. The drive broke, and now I cannot boot into my laptop. I need to boot into windows. Will a fixmbr command work, or will I have to reinstall windows or something else as drastic? I would appreciate a quick response.

Thanks,
tekgek

Boot into Windows via the install CD, go to the repair concel, then run the Fixmbr command, that should fix things up nicely for you. I also like to run Fixboot C: as well just incase..........

whenever i get a bad install of unix' and need windows i just reinstall my ol' faithful PCLINUXOS 2007 final and all is good :)

so i can "fix" the MBR and it will let me use the unix and windows like it should?

Fixmbr and fixboot, as said should do.

But i got a question, if the mbr was written on the external drive this would mean that the mbr on the internal drive is still intact, so by removing the external drive, or at worst resetting the internal drive's xp partition to active via a partition manager should also do the trick right?
