When I ran SpeedTest I got these results:

1339 kbps download

728 kbs upload

My internet provider is Qwest.

I'm new to this, so I don't know if the results are good or bad, any thoughts?

Were you doing anything else on the computer while testing?

1.3mb of speed isnt even offered here with verizon. I have 3/768 through them and my speeds are always around 299X downloading.

It all goes by what plan you have.

I just have the basic Qwest internet service, I wasn't doing anything else. I didn't understand your answer tho, is 1339kbps very slow? Yours 299X? can you tell me what 299X means?

slow and fast are relative.

I have a 3mbps connection which to me is fast.

You have a 1.3mbps connection.

Looks like you have the Qwest FASTER plan which is speeds UP TO 1.5mbps download.

I would say your connection is doing well!!!

Fast for me could be slow for you - my one friend has a 6mbps cable modem and thinks it is slow.

I think you have their mid range package, which is 1.5Mbit speeds. If so you're actual download speed is about right. The max you'd get would be ~1500kbps.
The cheapest package they have is only 256k DSL which is very slow, if you're paying for that and getting 1339kbps, then it's great!

Cable DSL providers tend not to lock your speed, but instead they have a higher "contention ratio"
Contention ratio is how many people you share the "back haul" link with from your area to the ISP.
Most do 48:1 which means you share the link with 48 others, this also means during peak times the speeds can go down due to congestion, and during off-peak times there's less congestion so you get more speeds.

Unless you do a lot of downloading, those speeds are perfectly fine!

Thanks so much for your replies, I feel alot better now. I think I have the package just below their fastest service but don't remember what its called. Anyhow, everything (games etc) seemed to work fine with it, just wanted to check with folks that know about such things

it all depends on how far the server you speed tested to was, the kind of connection you have, and how well (if at all) your tcp/ip stack is tweaked. for example, i have the fastest internet availible in my area (other than like a t1 or something, but im not spending that much ) so my speed test look like this which is actually faster than advertised speed hopefully verizon wont find out about that anytime soon

How much is that a month?

take the last number off of both, and those are close to my speeds. 3mb/512kb advertised. down is pretty close, up is usually around 400.

hey, i would call even that fast, divide 27,795 kps down by 4,000 ≈ 7k, and 5,267 kps up divided by 2,000 ≈ 2.5k, and that proves the overwhelming power of dail-up

That must be the good dial up, before I got my Sat internet I was getting 2.5K down gray hairs going up Were out in the sticks. Now I get 64K down not blazing but compared to the dial up 25 times faster. It's very consistent though 64K to 62K average. They just ran fiber optics past the house so were hoping that's going to mean fiber optics internet soon.

how much did the satellite internet cost? cause when we tried getting it from direcway, it was like 50 bucks a month, but that was a while ago.

WOW - why not just go with a Wireless broadband plan from Verizon or one of the cell providers? Father-in-law pays around $60+fees a month and now that they have it fixed he easily gets the same as that 64k speed - at my house the same connection gets 1.4mbps! Just depends how the towers are in your area.

his dial up would be around 22.4 connection speed, so 2.4 whopping unbelievable fast download speed ;)

Sat internet is still 49 a month for 512kb, I had Verizon for a while the service was fine but expensive for what I got. It's just not available for internet here. I can get WIFI using a big echo star dish in the yard, but the hot point is a truck stop and at times gets very slow. Since I work from home in my case it's a tax deduction the only down side to Sat internet is no online gaming due to the uplink/downlink lag time. Working from home has other advantages, almost any thing I get for the computer is home office improvements deductible. My better half is an accountant so it works out well.

we tried to get sat internet at my house, they cancelled installation on us 4 times due to no equipment, so we cancelled on them.

I wish they could get DSL more than 4 miles, we are just barely outside of the range.

the virizon package i get is 110 a month for internet, tv & phone all on fiber. its advertised as 95 a month but i have to pay extra for HD equipment. but even on a tube tv the picture is way better than comcast not to mention you get a free wireless G router

They canceled install on me twice on the Sat internet, lack of equipment. Called the Sat installer instead of dish network directly, 3 days later he showed up. There is a shortage of equipment, he said some people are waiting 6 months or more.
