Best Buy, Circuit City and so on...are for the non tech types to buy they're PCs. I can't believe that a person that visits a forum such as this would even consider such an action.
There are better gaming rig sales out there. ibuypower would be a better choice. You're going to get a better quality rig and great tech support. You also have to keep they're upgrading capability in mind.
PCgamer mag has a few companies' ads in there as well.

You obviously are underestimating the influence someones other half has when it comes to buying expensive toys.

I've never tried ibuypower.com, but I have bought from cyberpowerpc.com and it's great. Since you're going for relatively higher end, those might be better choices than the big box names.

The only computers I'll buy from big box companies are either laptops or those extremely cheap models at $399 with included monitor, that you'll only ever use for internet and word processing. For applications where performance and upgradeability counts, custom-built is the way to go.
