Actually, no. I think that happens with badly designed web pages where all the content is left centered (old html styles). The present set of Web 2.0 style sites which I usually surf appear fine, as most are coded with strong CSS and sensible layouts. But yes, on most sites there's a huge gap on both sides of the centered content......lol.
In vertical (portrait for the purists), it's a different story. I'm awed out of my wits.......applications like Acid (track based music composition tool) and Sound Forge are just on "real-estate-steroids", if you know what I mean.
