Ok was going to buy a gigabit wired router yesterday, but they didnt have any in store, so I bought the D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N with gigabit router instead - hell $25 more than the wired and it included wireless N ( not dual band though ).

Now, I FINALLY got it working on Verizon DSL - had to call them, and it still took over 2 hours to get the damn thing to work right due to the stupid Westell 6100 modem/router - ARGH.

Ok - everything worked, except the wireless connection upstairs in the kids computer room. I have a Linksys WUSB54G V4 USB Wireless g adapter on hers for the internet. Every time I would try to use the D-Link routers wireless instead of the Linksys Access Point, it would BSOD the computer and just keep doing that and restarting. I had to unplug the wireless USB adapter to get it to stop! I then disabled the wireless in the d-link, and hooked the access point back up, then everything worked great again.

My question - is the new router too powerful for the old usb adapter? I couldnt find anything on the net about conflicts, but with the super bowl starting, I didnt look too hard.

Any way to get the old usb adapter to see the new router without trying to set a world record for BSOD+restarts ?

Was going to buy a N adapter but the damn things are $100 - $20 cheaper than the router for a stupid card - thats crazy! I might have to, but DAMN.

It BSODS on this file - RT2500USB.sys

seems that is the main file for the linksys usb adapter. If I uninstall the linksys software it works, but windows XP doesnt have a built in driver to work with it, so I end up having to reinstall the Linksys driver, whcihc of course puts me back at square one

Did you look for a firmware update on the router?

Take it that it is also the most current version of the wifi stick software.

I might have missed something, but you got a Wireless N Router (not dual mode) is the wireless G USB adapter compatible with that?

Firmware is the newest - updated first thing

USB stick software is the newest, checked that also.

All wireless N products are supposed to be backwards compatible with B and G items...even says so on the package and in the instructions

Oh there is a mode setting in the wireless router for either 20mhz or 20/40mhz auto - I tried both with no luck. I did NOT try setting it to G only, since it is on for N,G,B.

Update - just got off the phone with D-Link and they told me I should call Linksys because those are the only devices not working with it.

Sigh

Now if only Linksys has AMERICAN support - damn I hate talking to a foreign country for a problem with a product I got in America.

When you say the USB software is the newest, Do you mean to say you're configuring the connection with the Linksys software or just have the latest driver files installed?

If you're using the Linksys software to configure it, UNINSTALL IT!
This might remove the driver as well, but you can install that manually. You should use the inbuilt XP client to configure/connect to wifi networks instead.

1. Remove all Linksys software & reboot
2. Search Linksys driver CD for RT2500USB.sys - When you find it, navigate to the folder it's in and copy that file along with the .inf file to a folder on your PC
3. Goto Device Manager and check for an unknown device (Prolly called "Communications Controller/Device) and D-Click. Goto the driver tab and click Update Driver. Then navigate to the folder you copied the driver files to and install.
4. Reboot the PC. You shoudl now have a new icon in the taskbar. D-Click and connect to your wireless network
If there's no icon in the taskbar, goto start then run - type "services.msc" and press enter. Scroll down the list till you see "Wireless Zero Configuration" - D-Click and click on "Start", also make sure "Startup Type" is set to "Automatic"

Linksys use a generic chipset on that usb stick, may by these work better

I never install the linksys crappy wireless stuff except the driver ;)

On the phone with linksys now and asking why their driver doesnt work but another one does Downloading and trying that link now.

I have been reading all over the net about this driver causing problems even back in 2005 and people using this generic driver to solve the problems.

Linksys is pissing me off - They asked why I ddint buy a linksys router - I told her, hopefully you can see why I ddint now

going to try that driver now.

That driver worked great! I love the actual tool too - shows signal strength, noise, etc!

Now to send a nasty email to Linksys I hung up on them as she put me on hold for 10 minutes to transfer me to her superior.

They DELETED my post on the forums because I told them of their lack of support and how they need to hire people who understand the English language and can help solve problems!
