Build a Smoothwall router OR?

Post by DX »

I have a really old Linksys router the BEFSR11 version 1.0 so it is over 10 years old now I think and needs a power cycle now and then. I was thinking of setting up a Smoothwall router on a linux box with an old 1gz P3 with 512mb of ram. Or possibly just get a new D-Link DGL-4100.

Just wondering what you guys think?

Smoothwall will give you more features and performance, but it will use more power and take up more space. You can also install a wif card and use it as an access point too.
A router will be a lot easier to live with though.

I had Smoothwall running on a Pentium 1 with 32MB of RAM for a while.

Worked nicely on the relatively slow connection I had at the time (1.5 mbit down).

I took all the fans out of the box, so it was completely silent, other than the hard drive.

Tomato is much better than dd-wrt if you are wanting to go the route of using a linksys. The QOS on tomato is 100times better than my dlink dgl-4300 gaming router. It actually works. But if you want to go the route of pure linux and a computer http://www.clarkconnect.com you cant go wrong with that.

Overall get a supported linksys and put tomato on it. You will be a very very happy camper!! TRUST ME! I am in love with its QOS!
