New Mp3/video player?

Post by maj0r_pawnage »

Well I've been stuck without any kind of music device for almost two years(yeah I don't know how I've survived either..) and now I have come across about $270 worth of spare cash maybe $300 max w tax/shipping if it was really really worth it. Since I've been outa the market for a while I was wondering what type of mp3 players do you guys have and what do you recommend for this price range? I was looking at an ipod touch 8gb, but I figured the novelty of a touch screen would wear off soon and I'd be stuck with the reality of 8gb of storage.(btw I guess i would like a relatively large screen so it would be easier to watch movies :D.
I know there are reviews and stuff out there, but it would be nice to know how people who have used the products actually like/dislike about their own mp3 players.
+ I don't need new earbuds now I will suffer with the stock ones until I can afford to get some shures :P
:-/ lookin at the other flash players...ipod touch 8gb doesn't seem so bad now lol
Ty in advance

the new Creative zen is great, i don't personally own one, but the screen is fairly large (2.5"), has enough storage (4 to 16GB, with SD Card expansion, too), great interface (not touch, but hey), great audio quality (yes, i've heard it), and plenty of people like it (editors, owners, etc.), and the 4GB is reasonably priced ($120 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6855102033), so you could get a dock or those uber expensive shure headphones.

I love the new Zune "Nanos" they have such high-dpi screens, even more so than the new iPod Nanos, which is great and all, but i would think that my eyes would hurt after trying to watch any sort of videos (thank god the menu text is massive)

isn't zune= hard drive though? I don't really need like 80GB of space because I won't be doing much more than just listening to music and maybe a few short movies or TV EPs

hmm now that I think about it lol, having entire collections of simpsons/seinfeld/family guy ect on an mp3 player would be pretty sweet lol

The Zune "Nanos" are flash-based and come in 4GB and 8GB variants. Zune 80GB is hard-drive based and so are the old 30GB models. I've seen the 30GB Zunes go on sale at Amazon from time to time. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, I remember they had it for $89.99.

I still have an old Toshiba Gigabeat F-series and I'm quite happy with it. It can't do video but that's what I have my PSP for.

I don't like iPods myself, but they're also worth a look. I suggest you head over to one of the big box stores and test the players they have on display to see if there's any that catches your fancy.

I've got an iaudio 7, and love it, particularly the battery life. The screen's pretty small for watching videos though, and the 16gb model is tricky to get in Canada.

I nearly went with the new zune when I needed a new player just after christmas, but it wasn't out in the UK yet, so I went with the 80gig ipod classic.

How are you planing to use your MP3 player? The reason that I ask is because a buddy of mine just bought the 30GB Zen from Buy.com and it works great for work, but I wouldn't recommend taking it with you when running. I bought my wife a 2gb Sansa so that she can take it running and I've got an older PNY Vibe 512MB that I take with me when I'm at the gym. Several of the newer MP3 players have an upgradeable memory slot, so that you can add an additional SD card. You might want to consider something like that.
Don't ask me, cause I know nothing! I'm lost in this world of technology and am barely holding my head above water. Thank the Good Lord for LR, otherwise I would have drowned years ago.

Well the 30Gb Zen was a lot bigger than the 4-16Gb (Flash) Zens, and they're much thinner and smaller than the 30Gb, and the 4-16Gb Zens do have SD Card slots.

Looking at current Amazon prices, the 16GB model seems like a good buy at $180. For most people, 16GB is enough to contain their music collection with room left for a movie or two. For lower needs, Amazon has the 8GB model for $140 but for a difference of $40 and with your budget, I'd go with the 16GB model. It's worth looking at the tech specs to see if the Zen supports SDHC cards. Otherwise, you're going to have to divide the rest of your music on 2GB SD cards. They're not expensive (just bought 2GB SD for $7.99 a piece + tax), but it's a hassle having to switch cards.

Exactly what I was getting at. You don't necessarily need the 30GB model if you are willing to add an additional SDHC card. I've found 8GB SDHC cards on the net for under $30.00 and from what I've read the capacity for the SDHC is only going to get larger. As far as manufacturer goes, I personnally like the ZEN models as they tend to have some really cool features and use the MP3 format rather than Ipod's proprietary, you must you use iTunes fromat.

I have been very happy with my 8GB Meizu Miniplayer. It is flash based and has a very large screen for it's size. It supports a wide variety of formats as well and is rather cheap. I was able to get mine for $140 and they have a rebate on Newegg now where you can get it for $135 here. Here is a review of the product if you want to take a look and the specifications can be found in the Newegg entry.

I have a Zen. And since I was very concerned about music quality, I investigated this aspect of many different players with great care. The one that sounded best to me was the Zen. And combined with a set of Sennheiser headphones (I settled for the PMX-60s - hey! I wanted a bit more bass than "earbuds" normally provide...) it's amazing!

Nice set of speakers. I have a pair of PX-100s myself. Sennheiser sure makes some nice headphones, especially if you're looking for some which are not earbuds. Personally I prefer regular headphones since the earbuds can cause permanent hearing loss and I have a bit of hearing loss already. No sense in aggravating a problem.

I just found out that the price of the Zens are going down because of the 32Gb iTouches, so if you were planning on getting the Zen, you may be able to get a larger capacity version :) :
