I just used up 3GB of RAM!!

So I was photoshoping an 11MP image, and I tried to add a displacement filter thing to a reflection layer to make it look like real water, except it wouldn't do it.
I ran out of my 2GB, so I broke down, set my rig to stock and put in 2x512MB's to bring my total to 3GB. Tried the filter again, and it still ran out.
The pic is here:
Here's me thinking of the little guys and adding a thumbnail rather than the whole pic

Rock on 56k'ers!
Ok, so it was a crazy big photoshop document, but I can't believe I found a legitimate need for 4Gig of RAM.

you know we will
I've run into stuff like this, i have 3gigs as well (stupid 32-bit OSes), mainly while trying to resize my pics to over 7000 sq. pixels, but i guess that isn't really necessary, or reasonable at that.

no you've found a reason to up your ram to 6-8GB and upgrade your OS to 64bit

Hmm, I wonder why the paging file didn't pick up the slack, I've never had a problem with filters even on computers with lesser amounts of RAM, it just takes longer.

I've run out of ram on my 4gb rig in a few different tasks, most often when playing around with hd-dvd/blu-ray rips.
If I didn't have budgetary realities, I'd happily be running 16gb of ram in my machine.

sorry dan, slightly off topic, but just out of curiosity, what OSes will actually be able to utilize 16 Gigs of RAM?

w00fd06, don't worry about hijacking, it's all good.
Windows Server 2003 SP2, Datacenter Edition
32bit: 128 GB (64 GB with 4GT)
64bit: 2 TB
How the hell do you fit 2TB of RAM in a server. How the hell do you even max out the 128GB of the 32bit limit?

i thought it was the pagefile(physical RAM and non)
that reminds me that NFS Prostreet uses 600MB of RAM on lowest of low setting and it gives a little box in the corner that says "Warning: OS Paged Pool Memory low" with my 1 GB of physical and 2 GB pagefile
but Team Fortress 2 also gives me that IF i have Fraps running

Just checked I wasn't being stupid, and that the scratch disk (page file thing) for photoshop was active, and it was. Found out that photoshop was set to use only 70% of my free RAM, but changing it to 100% didn't help.
I think the lack of RAM might have something to do with the fact that I enlarged the layer to 400% before applying the filter (erm, that would make that a 44MP layer

) but I did have a reason, that is so that when it aliases with the displacement, the shrinking back down to 100% will null that out.
In the end I've applied the displacement filter to a layer mask instead of the layer, works much better (I think i was supposed to do that in the first place

)
But it's definitely a geek trophy... I used up a full 3GB of RAM.
Sweet. ^_^

On 32-bit Windows machines, I've taken to just setting a static pagefile at 4GB on every drive. 4GB is the max sized pagefile on 32-bit Windows, and space is cheap, so this saves on fragmentation, and eliminates situations when the static pagefile is set smaller than it needs to be.

After reading information about the page-file, it's best to put it on any drive large enough to fit as long as it's not the bootable drive. This way, the HDD isn't being tasked so much and offers the OS faster response time.
I found this information a few weeks back and posted it the forums here:

Hope this helps others.

well, i only have one HDD

and yes i remember that thread, after it, i upped the pagefile to "double my physical RAM"(to 2048)

I have been using more than 2gb ram frequently, after switching to vista. probably because I have so much junk running in the background

Just curious, but would a 64 bit OS make a difference? I'm wanting to do home movie editing and if 3gb's of ram didn't work for Dan, how much ram will I need?
I apologize if I have hijacked your post Dan, but if you're having problems with what you've got then I'm sure to have issues when I get my new pc.
Thanks!

64bit allows you to use more than 4GB of RAM. You can use upto 4GB of RAM with 32bit OS's but they can't see all of it as things like graphics memory, etc have to come out of the pool. So you only realistically see around 3.2gig.
I've done a bit of video editing, and at a push you can do it OK on 2GB (Using 32bit XP). I didn't really see a complete lack of RAM till it came time to encode it all back to video, but it was able to cope and probably just took longer than it would have with more free RAM. I was editing 3 different video feeds and another audio, so you should be all right with just 2GB.

I appreciate the info Dan. I guess I'll spend the extra money and go with the 64 bit Vista OS instead of the 32 bit and get 4 GB's of ram to make sure that I'm covered.
Once again, I apologize for hijacking your thread.

Its not that big a deal. 32bit OS will still recognize 3.5GB of the 4 (mine does). I don't recommend the 64 bit OS because of the lack of support, drivers, etc., especially in XP.
BTW Dan, you have the same ram I just ordered except mine is 4-4-4-15 instead of 4-4-4-12. Did yours come at those timings or did you adjust it in the bios?

Razorbacx, really no worries. It's not like its a million miles different topic you were asking about.
I've got a weird version and it's default is 3-4-4-15 @ whatever volts. It's rated for 2.4v. But I was able to get the 3-4-4-11 @ 2.2v and that is running at something like 840Mhz normally. Those are the tightest timings at that voltage that my board/memory combo will be work at.
The AW9D-MAX has really harsh memory subtimings though so it limits how far you can push most RAM.
