Used E6850

I just picked up this used E6850 for $130 shipped with the stock HS and fan.



Processor's history:
* Purchased new from Newegg on 11/05/07.
* Installed under a Swiftech Apogee GT waterblock using Arctic Silver 5. Yes, I follow instructions.
* Ran for four months at 35C. Never overclocked.
* Removed from system yesterday.
* Cleaned with ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover and Thermal Surface Purifier.
* It was NEVER overclocked and was water-cooled the entire time. So, it is in Like New condition and 100% working order.

I can 100% guarantee the processor works 100%, or money back.

I think that this cpu was overclocked. Who puts a cpu under water and doesn't overclock it? Is there any other practical reason to water cool a cpu? Is there any way to tell if its been overclocked?

I bought this through an ebay auction and I insisted on a 7 day money back guarantee.

Once I install the cpu, what is the best way to make sure its working as new? You all have any suggestions on checking it out?

Some people water cool just for the silence and others just to say that they have water cooling.

After you install the thing, just run all the standard benchmarks on the thing to see if it falls within the average results of other like CPU's posted around the net and in reviews.

With it being so new, even if it were OC'd some, it shouldn't show any tell tale signs of performance short falls unless it was OC'd to the max with extreme voltage, then it might not be stable at all, even at stock speeds.

just put it in an older system (if you have one) and stress test the hell out of it for the period when you can ruturn it. im talkin about 24/7 prime 95. this is what i always do when getting a new procesor for any system. i always make sure it has at least~150 hours of prime 95 under its belt before i try anything rash with it (overclocking)

Ok thanks for the tips. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything important. I'll put it through some rigorous tests and see if its up to snuff.

150 hours? Are you insane? Thats more of a burn-in than a simple testing. The most I test is overnight.

Well it threw an error within moments of running Prime95, but only on thread 1 (core 0). The other thread ran on for quite a while before I noticed and stopped it. I tried quite a few times and still errors. I even manually set the vcore to stock in the bios, which was on default by the way.

Wow, glad he was cool about it but it makes you wonder how many iffy chips he's sold to unsuspecting n00bs...is why I trust NOBODY on eBay. Good luck with your new chip!

Thanks man. I'm iffy about Ebay as well and only bought it because I first saw it on Tom's Hardware, and the 7 day money back guarantee.

The guy is sending me another chip along with a prepaid envelope to return the faulty one. Thats good business.

Funny thing about this cpu is that it runs everything perfectly, but immediately throws errors when stressed. I can run 3DMark06 without a hitch, but it errors almost immediately with Prime 95.

Has anyone ever seen a dual core that had one weak core, or one bad core? The temps are 3c different and only the one with the higher temp is the one that errors every time. Weird!

I've seen cores do that, one core run fine and the other throw errors under stress. Don't know what caused it because with used CPUs you don't get a history. Probably OCing with to many volts for to long.

There's been news of counterfeit CPUs on Ebay, their not really counterfeit though, just stolen failed CPUs that were being sold on Ebay doing the same thing your describing. I wish I could find the link for it but lost it when I reloaded.

Probably not the case any way probably just OC to long at to high a voltage.

Thanks Methious, I was thinking the same thing, even though guy insisted it was never overclocked. Even a cpu underwater will have ill effects from high voltage after a certain amount of time, regardless of the temps.

He is stressing the replacement before he sends it out, so wish me luck.

it'll probably be fine. I imagine, I bought a 6600gt off ebay it arrived doa. they guy refunded me. I ended up with a card that was dead and my moneyback, but then It worked out better as I realized I could rma the card and get a free 7600 out of it.

Was that 6600gt a BFG? I ask because I know they have the lifetime warranty and don't bother asking to see a sales receipt.

An update:

The guy sent the replacement chip and a postage paid envelope to return the faulty chip.

The new cpu is fine so far. Ran stable up to 3.4Ghz with stock voltage, so I'm satisfied.

Stable at 3.6Ghz with 1.4v, idle 38c, max load 68c. (too high for my liking)

I ended up running it at stock and undervolting to 1.2v. Idle 32c, max load 49c, stock cooler.

Sometimes when you give a person a chance to do the right thing...they do!

Ya, its actually not too bad. Not as good as my E6750 though, which went to 3.2Ghz with no voltage increase. After doing some research, I found that the E6750 has more OC headroom overall based on the design of the chips. So Ya, I'm satisfied.
