ADSL Gateway(?)

Post by Alathald »

I don't know much about networking so bear with me. I'm currently rewire my room (here) and plan to also run a coaxial for cable and a phone line for DSL. The coaxial I can handle and the power line is taken care of (thanks Apop :) ) but I need some advice on hooking up the DSL.

I know I'll need a 'splitter' (forget what it's called) to separate the DSL signal from the phone and I think I'll need some kind of gateway or router but I'm not sure what all that entails. Basically, I'd like to install something like an ethernet 'outlet' for a clean look but IDK what I need between the phone line and my computer. Any ideas/suggestions?

My current setup is a 2WIRE 1701HG Gateway with two computers hooked up to it but I'd rather not run an ethernet cable through the house from one computer to the other.

You'll need a DSL Filter for the DSL side and filters for each telephone (it seperates the sound spectrum on which the DSL and your voice work on).

If you've got a spare closet or something like that, put your Gateway in there and run the phone line to it, and then run ethernet cable to a switch and then to each room into a wall plate (they should make a dual coaxil/ethernet face plate) so you'll have a nice clean look.

Very old house with very thick walls. There's some spots in the house I go from 5 bars to 0 bars (cell phone) so I doubt I'd have a really strong signal at the other end of the house.

I'll probably end up doing that, was just hoping that there was maybe an easier way (like just use a gateway for each computer) because one computer is a old Dell that doesn't have Ethernet and is hook up to the internet through a USB connection to the gateway (USB1.0 at that). In that case I guess I could just buy a new NIC for the dell but I'm unsure if dell has/had proprietary format for cards in there computers. Guess there's an easy way to find out.

Oh, and does the gateway really need a switch? It already has 4 Ethernet ports in the back...looks like this in back
[Ph] [E][E][E][E] [USB] [Power]

Thanks again!

Yeah, you could just use the ADSL router (gateway) instead of needing a switch.

You going to properly hard-wire the house for Ethernet then? Or just run the cables around the skirting boards and under carpets?

Well the closet I'll stick the gateway in already has a hole to the basement so I may as well run the line and install an outlet plate in the room for a clean look.

Well if you can hide all of the cables in the basement, then its not as bad as I thought it might.

Good luck!
