How much have the cpu's changed over the years (mainly looking at Intel)
i figure it goes like this:
Pentium 4
Pentium D
Core 2 Duo
From my very basic understanding the Pentium D was really jsut two P4's on the same chip, how have the Core 2 duo's or even the quads changed since then?
(Correct me anywhere i am wrong)
How much have they changed?
How much have they changed?

Re: How much have they changed?
how deep do you want to go into each series?
Pentium 4 consisted of -
Willamette - Jan 2001
Northwood - Jan 2002
Prescott - Mar 2004
Prescott 2M - Feb 2005
Cedar Mill - Jan 2006
you also had the original Extreme Editions -
Gallatin XE
Prescott 2M XE
Then on Pentium D you had a couple cores
Smithfield (90nm) Dec 2005
Presler (65nm) July 2006
on Core 2 you got multiple cores also...

Re: How much have they changed?
Im talking about the technology change have they changed it seriously? or are they still loosely based one the original Pentium 4's?

Re: How much have they changed?
You also forgot Pentium M's.
Pentium 4-D,Core 2 and Pentium M are different in terms of architecture in general. Core 2's predecessor is Pentium M
There are some advancements in the architecture of each stepping of course
That could be like more cache or other additions (like the addition of sse3, sse4.1, x64 instructions, virtualization, xD etc) or just finetunings to improve performance.

Have a gander at that
Ask away if you want further info.

Re: How much have they changed?
So really how i see it here
That thier is saying that the whole core 2 Duo range is built on two 'upgraded' Dothan cores on one chip? This processor was refined some more, aka reduced from a 130nm process to a 90nm process (now code named Dothan), and in games it could beat a Pentium 4 clocked at 3.4Ghz, while itself only being clocked at 2.0Ghz. Some enthusiasts recognised its power and with the help of an adaptor (from Asus?) they were able to run the mobile processor on an older 478 board and get kick ass gaming performance from Intel (that was a first for a long time!).
Intel went from strength to strength and brought out a dual core version of the Dothan with improved architecture to boot. Code named Yonah, released Q1 2006. Even though it was a dual core initial benchmarking with Yonah versus an identically clocked Dothan showed that the Dual Core Yonah was between 11% and 60% faster than the Dothan whilst having equal or better battery life. This line-up was called Intel Core Duo.

Re: How much have they changed?
Yeah, I guess.
That is a very very simplified way of looking at it though.

Re: How much have they changed?
The general architecture is very similar, with of course an extra core, more cache, etc.kappage wrote:That thier is saying that the whole core 2 Duo range is built on two 'upgraded' Dothan cores on one chip?
