Hello i have another question,. I have a dimension 4600 with a 2.66 p4 non hyper thred
my manual says that my motherboard supports ht processors. so my question is can i put this p4 3.4 ht processor in my motherboard
ive checked with dell and this is what they say:

now,.. as i look at other processors at intel.com they have a 3.4 that supports my chipset

I think this should fit unless dell limited processor types to make more money on there systems

I know most of you think i should chuck this system right out the window but i guess its sentamentle to me.
spending alittle to make it faster doesent bother me really,, besids i have my new computer comin already well atleast the mobo anyway..

the only descrepincy i can see is the 1mb l2 cache and my manual says 512 l2 cache

That CPU sounds like an Intel Northwood.

Due note though, the later higher clocked Northwoods had the hyper-threading. These were clocked at 3.0Ghz and higher. The slowerNorthwoods didn't have hyper-threading.

Download CPU-Z, run the sofware to check out more information dealing with this CPU.

It's a good CPU to do F@H with.

hmm, if that is an early p4 it is probably a socket 462 (or is it 492? one of those) and i think the later p4s were lga 775

Download and run CPUZ, then copy the info from that (like socket type, bus speed, etc) so we can know for sure what CPU (inc type) you have, and if that other P4 compares.

There could be the problem that the BIOS isn't programmed for the new CPU, but if it is the same as the old one, just faster, it should work as an 'unknown' cpu anyway.

That would be socket 478.

Do you have a direct link to the processor you are planning to buy? That would help us more in determining whether there might be incompatibilities.
