New laptop (maybe) any suggustions?

Hey guys,
The screen on my laptop just went out, so I sent it into Dell. It was the usual tech support process; they sent me the shipping box, and it is on its way. The thing that makes this whole thing interesting is the fact that they asked me to send in the charger with the laptop. Since my dog tripped on my original laptop charger, I ordered an after-market one. Now, I know that Motorola and some other companies say that their warranties are void if you use unauthorized chargers, or otherwise non-Motorola chargers. Is this the case with Dell? I am just wondering because if they are not going to fix the machine, then I can feel justified in buying a new laptop.
Now, question number two: I have been duped by Hp, and maybe Dell, but this does happen with Dell, then where do I turn for a nice laptop under or slightly above $1000?
Thanks,
Tekgek
P.S. I have to write this from a friend's computer that is as slow as Molasses on a January morning (think old AMD Athlon XPs, specifically, the 2500).
