this is....special

Post by skier »

yesterday i was gonna play a little HL2:E1 after foolin with Linux a bit, but when i went into linux, it went past grub and initial boot page, then the mythical, "frequency out of range" error, so wtf (i thought) i rebooted and it did the same; then i went into BIOS to OC by 1mhz (for windows)because i had nice temps(it was raining and cold outside) and it wouldn't post; so i cleared CMOS, tryed again, nothing; moved around the RAM, nothing; try an ancient PCI video card, nothing, in all PCI slots; unplug...everything, nothing; try another PSU, nothing; a little bit more fooling, it goes into BIOS, but i have no HDD plugged in, so i hold the power button to shut down, it just reboots back to BIOS :? i press the switch on PSU, plug in HDD, start it, no BIOS; unplug the HDD, still no BIOS;

and i cleared CMOS before every try, and everytime all fans spin up, CPU, VGA, Chipset, case;HDD spins up; CDs spin up, i reapplied the thermal, its seated good

is this the board?

Have you made any hardware changes recently? It almost sounds like the bios got corrupted. You may want to try and restore the bios. But thats just my 2 cents

no, its been the same hardware since august or so, any reason why it would go into BIOS that ONE time? then not shut off?

i've ruled out:
Video
Power supply
Optical/Hard drives(duh)
RAM
CMOS battery(holds a 2.5 -2.8 volt charge)

so its down to either the CPU or MOBO, or its just a fluke :vom:

From what it sounds like your saying is that it froze while in the bios, you did a hard reboot, and now it wont go into the bios at all. Do i understand you right.

kinda, except it was tweaked out while in linux before it all happened, then it wouldnt go into BIOS, then it supposedly "froze in BIOS" then wouldnt go in again

thats what happens when i make a quick stop online... you have any way to test the CPU and mobo with other spares (i assume not cause you'd already have done that...)

maybe a replacement board/CPU combo is in order

The AMD X2 & Asus mobo is on it's way this week..

I'm in the process of moving house (get the keys on Fri), so have to find the time in between

The new X2 and mobo should be a nice upgrade

I think you waited long enough :-s

as long as it comes(be it 5 months later than anticipated), and i should get a PSU in next week or so too(for the 3870 X2)

also, i still even have my soyo board that doesnt work(heatsink's harvested of course) i think i'll try to pull the northbridge off, see what happens, it'll probably start to fall apart by force like the XFX one did  who knows, i'll send pix of any amazingness :P
