laptop constant reboot

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

Once again, I need your sage advice....

Got a Compaq Evo N1000v laptop that will get to the XP splash screen then it reboots
Have tried repair install to copy registry files (system, default, security, sam) but that didn't do the trick. Tried rebuilding bootcfg and that didn't work either.

Was going to try a repair but don't get that option on any of the XP disks I have and I don't have the customer's disk (yet) Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jack

Just wait till you get the disc. If the disc does not help I would just do a wipe and reinstall. If that doesn't work then you may have a bad harddrive or maybe a loose conection.

I saw a compaq display laptop doing this at Best Buy yesterday. It would try to boot, get a memory dump, then restart. What a great way to sell a computer.

i can imagine the best buy rep trying to sell it:
"umm yeah this is a great new feature. the laptop is smart enough to know when something is wrong, and when it senses it i will reboot endlessly to get your attention. greatest thing since sliced bread if you hask me!"

Will it go into Safe mode?

If it does then it's probably an XP problem.

If you get into safe mode try the restore from a previous point. Failing that:

Wait on the customers disk, or check for drivers on the HP/Compaq website and do a manual install of XP and load the web drivers. It won't have the programs off of the OEM disks but it also won't have all the bloatware compaq throws on them.

Some models you can restore from a hidden partition, the Compaq website should tell you how if that model has that feature.

Thanks once again, everybody.

It won't boot into safe mode either, Meth, it is the same behavior. Hopefully, I can get the customer's disk so I can do a repair install and not lose all her data. The boss-man is supposed to be picking it up for me.

I pulled the drive and hooked it up on my shop PC. It doesn't have the repair partition. Forgot to mention, I also ran complete hardware diagnostics and everything passed. I'd kinda figured it was a Windows thing but I always like to run it past y'all to make sure. :supz:
