KVM Issues, video card setting?

Hey Guys,

been some time since i have posted - been pretty crazy busy.

Background: parents have computer, old HP P3. Has a Nvidia GeForce4 MX420 video card in it. has a flat panel monitor hooked up to it. everything works greats (except really slow, but thats cause it is old...) Mother is now a Mary Kay person and wanted to have her business stuff on a seperate computer. I have a put together P4 in my place that i didnt use so i brought it over. I also had a KVM that i used to use, less then year ago, and stopped needing so i brought that over as well. i hooked it all up, after some trouble shooting some minor problems with the mouse, i got it all working - can jump back and forth between the two with no problems. This was on Sunday

The Problem: On monday my mother calls me up and says that the Old (p3 with the MX420) is "frozen". When they switch to it, the screen says "no signal" and then goes blank and nothing happens when the mouse or keyboard are hit. I get over there on Tuesday to take a look. sure enough, it says No signal on the Old one and can swith back to teh new one fine and the new one works perfect. i poke around and take out the KVM and plug the monitor and keyboard/mouse directly into the old computer. The monitor turns on and everything work properly. i plug the kvm back in and both computers work perfectly with the KVM just as they are suppose to... Why did the other not work???!?!

what i have done: I did some google searching and read something about the signal not going to the old comp correctly through the KVM and because of the older video card it "turns off" or something like that and when i switch to the old one after being not used for a while (hours) it does "wake up" the video card...

HELP anyone have any ideas? is there a setting somewhere that can tell the video card to stay on or something?

thanks for the help!!

I had the same issue with one of my old PC's here at work when I hooked it up to a KVM, also had issues with Dell keyboard not working with it from time to time.

Bought a new video card for the box and swapped to an old IBM keyboard all my issues went away. Never really tried to fix the issue with the old card, just spent the 45 or so bucks on a new video card.

what about turning off all hibernation/standby stuff? is there another way to "wake up " the computer er other than through the keyboard or mouse?

Not sure if this works for everything (or older computers), but on some PC's at work when they go into low power/standby you can press the power button to bring them back out.

Was going to suggest disabling all power saving things, but not really sure if i understand the root of the problem.

I have that issue with my Belkin SOHO KVM and Vista. As long as I'm on Vista its fine, but if I switch to another PC, I'll get a blank screen on the Vista machine afterwards when I try to switch back to it.

well i went over there tonight and fiddled around with some stuff... I tried to make sure all the power stuff was off. I also enable the legacy usb function. that was about it... i will see if that helps. the thing with this problem is that i wont know if it helps/fixes it until over night or some time to let teh computer "rest".... what a pain!!!
