My mother has commissioned me to do some research on compact digital cameras in the $200 range so I figured I'd ask the fine folks around here for a recommendation. I was thinking of a Canon Powershot but I know next to nothing about compact cameras. Any suggestions? TIA

check out the Nikon Coolpix S550 i personally like it, good zoom, image stabalization and compact.

You can't go wrong with either of the Canon Powershot or Nikon Coolpix series really ..that's what kicks ass about them..PowerShot A-590 is good one or even the Nikon Viper mentioned..

is a good site if you want to read reviews of cameras/compare specs. They tend to focus on SLRs mostly but have some compact reviews on the site. If you want more help they have a forum full of photographers you can ask

But the suggestions here are good too.

Thanks, I think we're going to go with the Canon Powershot SX100 IS, it's more along the lines of what we need. Thanks for the recommendations!
