Will a graphics card that has one 6pin power plug and another 8 pin power plug work if my PSUs has two 6pins and I use a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter on it (HD4870X2)? Or will it work fine with just two 6pins?

Also, is this a suitable adapter?

I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. I'm using an 8 pin to 6 pin adapter on my current video card and I've had no problems. Especially if an adapter is specifically made for that purpose, I'd assume you wouldn't have any problems with it.

Currently all the extra two pins are are two ground wires, which only carry electricity back to the PSU. So using an adaptor will be fine (unless you have a really skimpy PSU, with wires barely thick enough, but most PSUs are ok on this front)

With the high end new cards, if the card detects them not there, it won't work.

Well your card might not need them, but the 4870X2 mentioned above apparently needs them ;)
And probably the 280GTX needs them too.

I don't know specific cards, so I'd check them out on a card by card basis.

well, if the converter works, great, if it doesn't, i may sell the card for college, as it stands, all it does is beep twice after i turn it on, and i get no video
