Best gaming setup for around £500!! (Or $800 US dollars)

Post by jigr69 »

Here on our little island called England, I have been set a challenge, to build a decent gaming rig for approximately £500. It should be able to play wth decent graphics and FPS such titles as Halo2, Half Life 2, Doom3 etc.

My thoughts start with a AMD 3100Sempron (E revision), DFI Nforce 3 250 motherboard, 1024MB of DDR memory, 6600GT AGP 128MB, with a 80GB 7200rpm hard drive. I should be able to overclock the processor enough to give farely decent performance, along with the graphics card. Anyone have a similar setup that can confirm my thoughts?

(Must go as its late, and I'm getting nagged to leave my laptop alone, and pay more attention to wifey!)
Pentium IV | 3.3GHz | 1024MB DDR 400 | 74GB Raptor | NVidia 6600 AGP 256MB

that DFI is a good mobo, and there are not many options when it comes to 754 + agp.

DFI arguably makes the finest boards on the market right now. not only do you get a top notch board, but a really sweet package as well....carrying straps, rounded cables, etc....actually will save you some money on the flip side

That does look like a decent budget setup. For some ideas on how a highly overclocked Palermo (90nm "rev. E" Sempron) holds up under the competition, check out this review :)

EDIT: And that DFI NF3 s754 mobo is very possibly the best OC'ing s754 motherboard available :)

The DFI NF3 250 is an amazing board, I have it and it works flawlessly.

Only problem is my cpu fan header seems to have dropped to 5 v today? :O
