Don't know if this falls under computers exactly but a computer is involved so WTH!

I want to get back into playing music again and perhaps doing some mixing and recording but I've never done anything with MIDI devices. I was thinking about getting a ~1/2 sized MIDI keyboard to connect to a soundcard on my PC. The MIDI/joystick ports on so-equipped soundcards support that operation do they not? I know I'll need other software for recording and mixing tracks, etc., but just wanting to get started.

Yeah should work that way, but I found the easiest to do is with a MIDI to USB adapter, which works fine with my e- piano and computer.

another good way to do it is jsut getting a regular keyboard, then getting a 3.5mm to 3.5mm headphone cable and connecting the headphone out put on the keyborad to the line in on the computer

Yeah, that's similar to the way I connected my tape deck to my PC to rip some music to CD. The biggest drawback to doing that was the extreme treble on the tape was amplified on the cd. (Arrrgggggghhh, my eardrums are sizzling ) Still able to salvage some good 80s 12" remixes

I always thought the whole point of MIDI was the flexibility of the .MIDI file (not that I know much about it)...

As for the treble issues, you could use something like Audacity or JackEQ to fix those issues in the file itself.
