How to fix this error.....

"One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered
by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful"

I know one of the registry hives is corrupted as the result of bad RAM and the normal way to fix it is to boot to a Win98 floppy and ren the backups to ../system32/config. But the computer in question is a Dell Dimension 2400 (running XP) and does not have a floppy disk. More troublesome is that the BIOS doesn't have an option to boot from a floppy and I can't get to the recovery console due to the stupid password and the BIG killer is now I have this badass pc to use on my bench but I have no PSU for it (!) so I can't just pull the HDD or even burn a boot cd. :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe: OK, little out of control on the axes! But you see my quandary.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to do this within Windows without doing a clean install? Is it even possible?!? Every time I try to rename the hive files, I get an error because they're obviously in use.I always can just wait until the PSU shipment comes in next week, I guess. Did I just answer my own question?
:finga: 2 me!

Thanks for any advice (besides just killing myself!)

You really need to get into the recovery console to fix this. So either wait for the PSU to slave it (what happened to your other work machine?) or get in contact with the client and ask for the password.

I had to use the last PSU in stock (in my new badass machine) for a customer. So I locked up the shop, went home and got my spare Antec 500, and installed it so now, at least the Q6600 has clean power. (It's SO frickin' FAST! :supz: Windows open almost before you release the mouse!!!!!)

Plus I was able to slave the drive and correct the Registry issue. Now my only other problem is the Start menu opens on boot every.single.time. Haven't figured out how to fix that one yet. Otherwise it's mint.

Thanks for the help, though, (as usual) Dan--thefingaman :) Have a good weekend.

LOL, Q6600 is fast, time to fold!

for the start menu look at

Start / Run / Control Folders / View ...
Uncheck 'Restore previous folder windows at logon

Thanks, Darkstar!! :drinkers:

I was using the "regular" folding client. Everyone has said to use the SMP client. I've been folding on a pretty regular basis for the last few months but haven't really delved into the different clients. What's the deal with the SMP client?

The SMP client will use ALL of the cores of your processor whereas the regular client will only use 1 core. I guess you could run 4 regualr clients with different machine ids and set the affinity of each one to a specific core, but the SMP is easier :)

Mike

you have to add flags with the SMP if you run it - you have a Q6600 so you would need to add -smp 4 (same as my Q6700 - 4 cores)

You will get a bit more points per day with the SMP ;)

Someone is writing a simple install guide I believe....have to check the folding forum.
