Laptop extremely slow even after fresh xp install

Post by tekgek »

Hey, guys,

Sorry, guys, I have have very little free time, and what little time I had, I have just sat and watched movies. Anyway, now that I have time for my computers, I have a problem:
I still have my wimpy little dell inspiron b130 (on a tight budget), and I intend to have it for another few months. But, there is a problem: Even after 3 fresh xp reinstalls, the machine is still sluggish, and about four times as slow. I have ruled out hard drive and ram problems. Any opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
tekgek

run PC optimize to see if it will help with your internet connection and other settings that help with the speed. http://pcpitstop.com/store/optimize2.asp

That is a good suggestion, but I think that since this is a fresh installation of xp, I do not that I need it. I did run it, however, and it found nothing wrong with my machine. I was leaning more toward a possible hardware problem. But, it could also be a software problem.

Thanks again,

My fiancee has a dell laptop, and it is just damn slow. Even after a fresh install of the OS it doesn't speed up. I have ruled it down to there just not being enough ram for everything. Maybe yours would speed up with a version of Linux.

check task manager and see if anything is running at 100% cpu, or close to it.

Here is a fix if it is the svchost problem that many have had.
Hello, I am posting this here because of this site's high google pagerank.

The workaround for this:

Disable windows update service by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and stopping the “Automatic Updates” service. Set it to disabled for now.

This will stop the freezing issue.

The fix for the windows update svchost.exe error is this:

1. Install the new windows update client:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

2. Install hotfix KB927891

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A
that is from http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/fo ... 0-a-3.html

Mike

hope it helps

I had a similar issue with my brother-in-law's old lappy. It turned out to be one of the slots on the board was bad. He had 2 256MB sticks and the thing ran like dog poo. I finally figured out that the stick wasn't bad. The thing ran faster and better with a single 256MB stick. I got a cheap 512 MB stick and the thing runs fine now (for what it is).
I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.

Okay, I have done everything here, except check the RAM slots. I have checked the RAM, but not the slots. How would I check the slots?

Thanks,
