Hi all, sorry I've been away (did you miss me?!? ) I've just been snowed at work for a change.

Anyway, I've got a Dell Dimension 5100 that was infected with Windows Antivirus 2008. I got that mess cleaned up but now I cannot connect to the Internet with it no way, no how. Here's what I have tried so far:

ipconfig /release & /renew (It won't see our network, it just comes up with "family room ")
repaired winsock
rebuilt the tcp/ip stack
I've tried another network card

All I get is "Acquiring Network Address" followed by "limited or no activity"

I'm open to any and all suggestons

What are the IP settings on the LAN adaptor?

It usually says that when it's connected but it's not getting a DHCP address or it's got a static on ehtat is wrong.

I'm not sure what you mean by LAN adapter. Do you mean the NIC or the router itself?

On the NIC in your computer.

Find the adaptor on the network connections thing, and right click properties it.
Go to TCP/IP (v4) and click properties on that.

Odds are your router assigns IP addresses (DHCP) so just change the settings to "use automatic" on that page.

Sadly, those settings are already automatic. I'm trying a reinstall of TCP/IP to see if that makes any difference.

Also, I'm getting a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it over the network icon in the bottom right corner of the screen (the name for that area just escapes me) I'm wondering if it's possible that there's still a remnant of the virus causing problems
I'll try another scan with something else and see what happens.

How long to you have to attemt to save it before a wipe and reinstall becomes a viable option?

Well I learned a new test, if nothing else.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if you can connect. If not, then some service is interfering.

BTW, Dr. Web Cureit found a buttload of other infected files that ComboFix, Malbytes and SuperAntiSpyware missed so now it's working.
