I cannot install a fresh copy of xp sp2 on my friends computer, it either just hangs while copying files or says that windows cannot copy file so and so. I have tried different HD's, different Ram even tried another optical drive. system is a 2.8 intel 478 on sis661 board

The motherboard might be bad. Try one stick of ram in one slot, then try it in the other slot (and so on).

Since you have already tried changing out the ram, this sounds like the next step to take.

are there any defects on the disk? I had this problem recently when I had a scratch on the disk it would crash in almost the same place every time. Pulled out the original disk, made a new copy, and it worked fine.

(I always make copies of "important" disks so that I don't have to use the originals often and risk scratching them. Having a child that destroys DVDs teaches this lesson quickly).

That is a good idea, but most of my disks are copy protected. Nero doesn't cut it in that sense.
