I got to look at my work's server today

I work in a school and our network manager asked me to help install a tape drive in one of our domain controllers, so I got to see the insides of our server for the first time. Needless to say I geeked out and had to grab my camera :P

So here's the geek pr0n!

I never realised how big servers are, it has to be like 2 & 1/2 of my feet long (which are pretty close to actual feet :P) and weighs a tonne.

The mobo is huge too, it's as wide as the whole unit thing. It's a beast. ^_^

nice, that is pretty slick... always fun to take a peak at what people are running... Do you remember the specs on the servers?

Ironically the Mac Pro I use has better specs, but the server is more than enough for what we need.

I don't remember everything, but they are each:
Dual Quad Xeons @ 2.13Ghz
And there is either 4GB or 8GB of the FBDIMMs

I'm off tomorrow, but can check on Monday :-)

my older brother is about your age, and were he is over here he has to look after numerous servers and 600+ PC's. But when they upgrade servers they normally just toss there old ones so a while back he picked up a dual Xeon CPU server, and a dual pentium ||| server, and they are super heavy. He has setup our own home mail server and also he runs a Gary's mod server, which he rules with an iron hammer. When he goes to lan parties aswell he tends to take the dual Xeon server with him to run as a dedicated server.. hes big into his lans...

Oh yeah, you have to love those dell boxes!! Everything in them is modular. I remember at my old job I was working on the tower version of that server (Dell 1900) I was provisioning it, putting the hard drives and ram in it and loading the OS. Well i decided to try something... While the server was installing windows, I removed all 3 CPU fans, (not the ram fan though, highly needed) and wanted to see what would happen. I kept feeling the heatsinks and they never got hot. They did get a little warm through the whole process, but not hot. It was pretty impressive.

The Fully buffered ram on the other hand gets unbearably hot though. Amazing it can run that hot! Glad you got to see your server! they really are amazing to see at times! Just wait till you have to work on one. LOL

WOW. So I guess calling the Thermaltake Armor a "server" case isn't too far off... You know your computer is excessively heavy when "It weighs more than a small child" is an accurate description (based on a "me with computer on scale" and "me on scale without computer" test, the thing weighs 75LBS, which is 5LBS more than the carry strap I use is rated for).
