Best laptop under a grand

I'm doing to buy a laptop I think. I have a cheap acer travelmate. The screen.... well sucks. The speed, horrible. The gaming abilities don't seem to exist.
I don't buy anything skimpy, but I'm an avid budgeter. I like good deals, but can't stand cheap things.
What I'm looking for
Screen quality I want something that looks nice
between 15-19 inch screen. I'll get used to anything
A decent video capability. I mean for playing something like Sims 2. Nothing like Crysis. That is why I have my desktop. Maybe a sport game on low quality.
Ram doesn't matter since it's only 20 bucks to upgrade ddr2 now.
I'd never use a webcam so if its included neat if not I don't care
Now the thing I need most help on. I don't know how much of a difference I'll see in their processors. I know it won't be powerful, but I don't want it to seem like it can't even compress a file.
Obviously needs wifi.
As for a hard drive I'm not too concerned either. They will all be about the same speed. As for storage I have a portable hard drive if I need space. I just need enough for some basic pics and mostly my work files that consume no more than 50mb. So anything over 100GB would be more than enough.

Help a brotha out!!!
Colors make it girly. It will mainly be my gfs. As for me I don't care. I'm not the guy you make fun of for a girly butterfly infested laptop. (that is why Sims and sport games are on there)

check out the Acer Aspire 5920-6954, i read a good review on it. Also have seen some mention of a $300 off any HP laptop on other forums, i use the HP at work and home and its a decent laptop.

I have personally never bought Acer myself, but it seems that the one I was just looking at, the Acer TravelMate TM4720-6206 seems to be decent, except for only a gig of ram, which, as Darkstar just said, would be just fine because he can easily upgrade the RAM. the specs are at the following lik:

ASUS laptops are pretty good. ASUS M51SN series should be able to handle any games that you throw at it, except for Crysis unless you turn the resolution down.

If you're in Canada, HP dv5-1174ca is an excellent gaming laptop. I would purchase this but I already have an Acer that's just sitting here and collecting dust.
