RAM Whoop!

Alright gents,

I have 2 GB of ram currently @ I believe PC6400 (OEM) in my current machine (Pent D 2.8 GHz, etc) and I have an extra 2GB of PC4200 laying around.

I know the PCXXXX relates to bus speed of the ram if I'm correct and inserting the last two gb will actually end up slowing down some even though I've added more.

Running Windows 7 (7000) and doing some gaming.

Gateway GT5014
Pent D 2.8 GHz
2GB DDR2 PC6400?
ATI x1650 Pro

Minor gaming is all

Yeah, all of the ram will run at the lowest speed.

More RAM is better than less RAM at faster speeds.

-My personal take.

LOL, So we have two conflicting answers...I realized it would run at slower speed but I guess my question

Will More Ram > Slower Speeds?

TBH it's something to just try both ways to see which way feels faster to you. It depends a lot on the programs you use frequently, most programs (including most games) never come close to using 2Gb of RAM so it would be smarter to stick with the PC6400 RAM only. Then again, if you use programs that eat up RAM (like photoshop) the extra 2Gb will make those programs faster in some aspects.

My personal opinion? Well first grab CPU-Z and make sure what you have is PC6400 and if it is, I'd leave the slower RAM out of the system. Your system as a whole will feel snappier and you'd probably hit a bottleneck with the Pentium long before you topped out the RAM anyway. :drinkers:

The only place you'd notice the difference with the faster RAM is synthetic benchmarks. Real world daily usage you will see the benefit of more RAM. You might lose a few FPS in your games but they will start faster, load faster and exit faster. I'd trade a few frames for faster load times and game exits.

Alright,

I'll stick the extra two GB in and I just managed to get a core 2 duo for free! yay

ahh sweeet best price ever FREEEEEEEE :) just make sure you put the slower stuff in the first slot tho as it may get hinky if you dont as it'll try running at the same speeds as the pc6400 ram

Owned

The motherboard won't support the proccesor so I sold it on eBay.

I did put all four GB of ram, WEI score stayed the same and the computer does feel better.
