ok so first issue I am having is my 1TB HD is only showing as having like 128GB availible. I am using XP pro 32bit. I am not sure if that OS has any problems with higher sized drives? Is there a way to bring back the unseen GB's?

2nd problem - after a restart last night it started givng me a blue screen and reboot after about 15-30 seconds. So now everytime i start up I get the blue screen and it restarts.. it was running for about 7 or 8 hrs fine.

sounds like you need a full format and a re-install... make sure the drive doesn't have any partitions that you didn't want.

just curious is this a used drive?

You have to have at least SP1 on the install disk. You might slipstream your install disk with at least SP1. I think that might be what happened with your install.

As far as making the partition right there might be a couple of tools you can use for that. I'll poke around a bit and see if I can find something for you.

If you have a bootable Knoppix disk I think there's a program called QTParted included. It's basically a Linux clone of partition magic. I've had mixed results in the past messing with partitions like that, sometimes it's just easier to make a slipstream and reinstall everything.

yeah i know the XP pro cd didnt have SP1- I had to up install all the service packs. maybe i just didnt notice I didnt have all my drive availible. ok - I will start from scratch.. so you think i need to at least install with SP1 to have the entire drive availible?

It is a brand new HD. I did a quick format when I installed. I have never made a slipstream disk.

Do yourself a favor and slipstream SP3 into your XP install disc.

Also make sure you are using NTFS and not FAT32. I believe Home likes to default to FAT32 but I am not 100% sure on that.

Home? I am using XP pro if thats what you were saying? I did format it NTSF. i'll give this slipstream a try. thanks for the link.

I am still not sure what is causing this blue screen reboot problem. hopefully the reinstall fixes that also.

ok quick question about this slipstream SP3- when i first load XP i tried to install SP3 but got a msg that i needed min of SP1 to install SP3.. isnt this going to have the same problem/missing files when i try to slipstream SP3?

I thought that problem was supposed to stop with SP3, but I haven't tried it yet. Personally I have avoided SP3, but it seems better now (than when it first came out). I'd just do SP1 and call it good. If you have 3 downloaded already, then just load it up once the OS is done.

i have SP2 on a disk and SP3 on a flash card.. I'll just use SP2 to be safe.

SP3 is fine. It is basically a bunch of fixes and hotfixes put into one file (i.e. SP3). When you slipstream SP3 into your install it doesn't complain about there being a SP1 prerequisite.

The other guys are absolutely right! I had the same issue when installing older versions of windows xp Pro without service packs. Slipstream the SP's and you'll be golden.

I downloaded the program Major_A linked. wow that couldnt have been easier to make a slipsteam disk.. point it to the directory of the two files to merge and it makes the ISO. I burned it last night but didnt have time to install yet. I will be doing that tonight. I cant wait to get this HTPC up and running. I am dieing to play GRID on my big screen.

service pack 3 contains all updates/fixes from sp1 and 2 the easiest way to do a slipstream is to use nLite
1: make folder called winstall and copy over the contents of your windows cd
2: make another folder within winstall called sp3 copy your sp3 install file to it
3: install nLite and run it it's very simple to follow if all you want to do is slipstream sp3
4: burn to a blank reboot and install
5: TADA one freash windows XP pro sp3 install and a whole lotta hdd

i have to say that using the program major_A recommended. Autostreamer 1.0.33 is even easier than what you are doing.
