Monitor wont go off in windows

Post by KnightRid »

ARGH

My father-in-laws computer all of a sudden decided not to let the monitor go to sleep or even the screen saver to work in windows vista. I tried setting them back to default and rebooting - no help. It works when the computer sits at the login screen, so I even tried the old "end task" in task manager to try and find what was causing it, but nothing helped. It worked before we had to replace his hard drive and redo the whole computer with everything that was installed on it, which is the exact same stuff as now.

Does anyone know how to get this thing working again? Is there a registry entry where I can look to see if it is fouled up or not?

Driving me and him nuts!

Thanx
Mike

i had the same problem and it turned out that since my mouse sensitivity was set so high it was moving just a little bit due to stuff like the washing machine or the heater coming on...now i just turn down the sensitivity when i go to bed or shut off the monitor

I know my computer's monitor won't go to sleep with the Guitar Hero guitar plugged in. Maybe it's a peripheral causing the problem?

I will try the mouse sensitivity next time I am over there - should be this weekend at the latest.

Peripherals - scanner, printer - thats it :) He is in his 70's, so guitar hero would not be his thing..lol

Mike

Worse case scenario - I will just have to redo the computer again and test it after every single program installation

There was a Windows update that had to be installed before mine would shut off.
I can't find exactly which one it was, but it had something to do with USB or a Human Interface Device.

Are you sharing any folders on the system? If you are there is a setting under the multimedia tab in power options that has to be set to either allow the computer to go in sleep mode or away mode. I think the default is set to "prevent"

Also SP 1 fixed some previous problem with the spleep function.

I had the same problem when I switched from an infrared mouse to a laser mouse in Vista and Windows 7 beta. A patch from Microsoft cleared it up about a week ago.

Never too old to rock out. Look at The Rolling Stones they all look like walking corpses.

no shared folders or equipment upgrades - I will check for windows updates and see if there are any - always forget that windows doesnt auto update everything!

Mike

Thanx for all the help!!! Will let you know if I get this working without a complete format and reinstall!
