Strange mouse disconnects/reconnects

Since I updated my BIOS for my new CPU my mouse has been disconnecting and reconnecting at random. Sometimes I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work again. Any suggestions? Not a driver issue as i was using the built in one in Vista64 then downloaded the 64 bit IntelePoint software from MS as it is a MS mouse. It didn't seem to help. I was thinking of possibly using a usb to PS2 adapter and just using it that way however I would like to just keep using the USB. It doesn't matter what port I use the results are the same. The next thing I'm going to try and see if i can change the IRQ that the USB is using. After that I'm not sure what to try. It is VERY frustrating when I'm in a RAID and I can't click to heal the tank when my head is under the desk unplugging and plugging in the mouse.

Do you have the latest chipset drivers installed? Have you altered the USB polling rate?

Nope just updated the BIOS and changed out the CPU. Nothing else was changed. I have the newest drivers from the ECS web site for the GF8200A version 18.12. Not sure what the deal is. I have run ccleaner, spybot and I have Symantec Endpoint Protection 11. The system seems to be running fine now but I haven't any idea why it started to be a problem and now the problem has magically gone away.

As soon as I posted the mouse flaked out again.

Have you tried a different mouse, or a different usb port?

Go into your BIOS. Select "Load Defaults/Load Fail Safes", something along those lines. Reboot the machine. After the defaults are loaded go back into the BIOS and make any changes. All boards recommend this procedure after a flash. Maybe something there is flaky.

The BIOS loads defaults after an update automatically as I had to reset everything. I also had jumpered the BIOS manually resetting it to defaults when this started happening. Swapped all around on the board to different USB ports.

Like you already mentioned try the USB to PS2 adapter. If it was working before the BIOS flash my only other suggestions are:
-Flash the BIOS back to the previous revision
-Try another mouse

Two instances

1) My office mouse stopped working randomly, light would go off on it (junky generic gateway mouse)...replaced and it worked fine for now on (the old mouse would stay in device manager most of the time when it went out). Latest MS KB & Mouse 7000 for the win.

2) My gateway, flashed my bios, and it decided to kill my WLAN Linksys USB54GSC Wireless Adaptor.

Mouse works fine on the other system. I have had this happen before on another computer and I ended up just formatting it and redoing it from scratch to make the problem go away. The mouse is a good Microsoft mouse.

Have you tried going to the Control Panel and setting the mouse to the default settings?

Maybe you should try the polling rate "hack" and see if the results are the same.

I'll give that a shot before sentencing it to reformat/reinstall.

That REALLY didn't work. It disabled all USB devices including my USB keyboard. I had to dig up an old keyboard that the letter b didn't work and the arrow keys down and right didn't work. Then get the original file back in place. I'm not sure why it didn't work but it definitely didn't. I got it going again with the mouse disconnects and I'll just have to format and reinstall.

Ticks me off that I can't find a decent solution.

Sorry to hear that. My Razer has On-The-Fly polling rate adjustments so I haven't tried that file. Maybe it wasn't for the 64 bit Windows. Before reformatting I would contact ECS and see what they have to say. Maybe they can duplicate the problem and issue a fix. That's a long shot but it's better than having to reinstall everything.

Try going into the device manager, delete the mouse and make sure and check the "DELETE DRIVER" - have new ones on deck though.

It isn't related ot the mouse driver as far as I can tell as it behaved exactly the same with the built in vista driver as it did with the Intelepoint software. There are different version of that hacked usbport.sys file so that didn't seem to be a version issue more that there must have been a patch that changed that file or how the system treats the files in system32.

I have to find a decent PS2 mouse yet. The only one I have at home is buried in the junk boxes where all old parts go to in my house. They never get thrown away but then they might never get used again. A kind of purgatory for computer crap in my house =)
