Hi everyone..long time no talk. I have been enjoying the fruits of my labor and I have no money left to upgrade anything ( my 22 month old son and my wife get it all) I have been noticing that lately it takes about 2-3 min for my system to post, most of that time is in the system and memery checking portion of boot up. It may be normal with 1 GIG of Ram but I am not sure. Any of you have any ideas as to why this may be happeneing and what I can do to fix it??

download Bootvis, it will optimize your your HDD for bootup.
You should also use MSCONFIG to see what exactly is running at system startup, a lot of programs install themselves to run at startup and will slow down your system

Thx Capper. Under MSCONFIG how do I know which "processes" are essential and which ones I can stop? I assume I get into MSCOMFIG by going throught the run comand?

Start> Run> type "MSCONFIG"> Startup (will be last tab
When you are there, don't uncheck any "system" files.....look for things you know your system doesn't need started at boot.
Better yet, list them here and we'll walk you through it.Download Bootvis and TweahUI while you are at it. bootvis will optimize your HDD for boot up, and Tweak UI can disable some pesky programs like Messenger, which are a bitch to get rid of.

I just uncheck them all

you can look them up online there are lots of sites that will tell you what a specific entry is for.

I downloaded and installed Bootvis and Tweak UI. I am not sure, since I didnt actually time the boot sequence before installing, how much it helped nor do I know what a typical boot time is for a system like mine but it takes 4 min. from start to finish and ready to use. Two minutes of that are whatever its is doing before the Bios screen list the CPU and memory data. The other two are booting windows.

Capper, he is talking about the black screen post I think.
Does it do a memcheck and intialize every byte of memory?
This happens on my server. You should be able to turn it off via the BIOS.

DA, if you have a fix for him, please share it. I have limited experiences with ABIT boards (none of them good) and have seen what he describes, but do not know the fix or work around.

make sure that the "quick boot" is enabled and like D-A said I'd disable memory check andother items that are not 100% required.

Capper, I'm not sure exactly, but I know that options for disabling that were in the bios of my dfi, chaintech, and msi boards. Its quick boot, quick start, memory check, and other stuff like that.

I have done all of the above things except disableing the memory check...I cant find that option in my bios at all. The overall boot times have improved but only on the windows boot up side. I have seen no change in the BIOS portion of boot up. The main delay seems to be right before the bios screen shows the CPU data. Once the CPU data comes up it goes fast from there.

hmm, no clue, you could try upgrading your bios if you haven't already and see if that does anything...

Okay, just curious. On ABit Boards if you are overclocking, sometimes there is a lag on some boards with the CPU being overclocked..If not, since it is before CPU posting, you might check to see if there is a bios update on ABit's site for your board and try that.
