Howdy all. I've been asked by the Village where we live to develop and maintain a small web site which would have general info about the Village events, newsletters, etc.. I've never been a "3rd party" webmaster before. It's a small Village, app 1000 residents, the mayor is in his 70s, my point being they're not overly tech savvy. As far as domain fees, etc., should I just handle that and include it in my bill or should I have them handle that end of it in case something happens to our relationship?

It seems easier to me to have them pay the bill but still have me as admin contact and technical contact. What's the usual protocol in these situations?

have them handle it so they domain and server hosting so it is owned by them just in case they terminate the contract with you.

Should I have them as tech and admin contacts also or should that be me? I've noticed on a couple of other similar sites under the Whois lookup that the webmaster is listed as those contacts but one or two showed the village.

Also, can someone give me an idea of what to charge per page for development and for monthly maintenance?

I was thinking ~$50 per page for development (no Flash or any crap like that) and ~$100 for maintenance depending on how much maintenance is needed maybe ~$25 per department per month?

I really appreciate the input.

IDK much about the fees side of it but as for building the site I do have plenty of great tools

First a couple Firefox addons...mainly just IETab and DOM Inspector. IETab lets you test the page with Internet Explorer without needed to load IE (loads right in Firefox). DOM Inspector can come in handy when trying to find the code for a specific bit of the page, saves you having to pour over the source.

All the other tools are bookmarklets, just navigate to one of your pages and do anything from test out new code on-the-fly to validate the source in one click. Most of the good webdev ones are here and here but there are some other good ones on that site as well.

Last, a resource I'm sure you know about but still warrants mention, the wonderful w3schools...

OK, one last pitiful plea for assistance on this subject then I promise to leave it the hell alone for y'all!

Can anyone point me towards a template or even a sample of a proposal for service that I can use to write the required proposal for the Village? In all the reports and different documents I've had to write over the years, I've never had to write one of these. I've scoured the 'Net and all I can find is ones I have to pay for.

Again, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
