Ordered Asus P5Q MB and 4 1TB drives

Post by KnightRid »

To replace my main systems MB that just croaked today :( I figured screw it, it was time to go RAID! I might need some help setting it up, since i want to have main boot drive that is not in the RAID setup, then the RAID drives will be all 4 of the 1TB drives. I would really like to have a 500GB as the boot drive and another 500GB as a backup for that also, but I dont think I can with out a separate RAID card.

I think RAID 5 is what I want for the 4 1tb drives to give me the most storage space/best protection.

Mike

Now I have to wait to get it...ARGH I miss my main system!!

OH - does anyone know how Vista will react to a new motherboard? Will I be able to slap it in and boot off my old drive, or will I have to do a complete reinstall right away? I really would like to be able to back up my emails/favorites/bookmarks/etc before doing the raid stuff

When I relpaced my 780i board with the x58 I was able to boot right onto my existing install. I don't know If it was 100% stable or not but I was able to back up all of my data with out an issue. Hopefully that helps ya out.

It usually depends on if you are going to the same chipset, i.e. Intel to Intel. Most likely and to avoid headaches I would advise you just to do a fresh install anyway. Which TB drives did you get? I saw where ZZF had 16MB Hitachi TB drives for $69 after a $10 MIR. Figures, seeing as I spent $99 a piece for mine ~ 3 months ago, though they are the 32MB variety.

*EDIT*
Which P5Q did you get?

Too many variations for me to tell.

Reason I ask...
P5Q SE Plus can't do RAID. ICH10 southbridge
ASUS P5Q SE/R can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q-VM can't do RAID. ICH10 southbridge
ASUS P5Q Pro can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q Turbo can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q-EM DO unknown. Intel ICH10DO southbridge
ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q-EM can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q-E can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q Deluxe can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge
ASUS P5Q Premium can do RAID. ICH10R southbridge

Straight P5Q - no deluxe or anything since I did not want crossfire or any of that jazz till I do a major upgrade.

I got WD GREEN Caviar 1TB drives for around $89 I believe.

I will try to boot right into it - I just remember the headaches with XP and trying to change motherboards ;) I was hoping Vista was better.

Mike

supposed to be here by Thursday - SUPPOSED to be - I ordered everything from Dell since they sent me a coupon for having the Dell Preferred Account
