W2K Printer Problem

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

Just not my week.

My wife called from work about her printer. Every time she tries to print, she just gets an hourglass. Brings up task manager to end non-responsive program.

I came in to try to see what was happening but cannot get into Printer folder from Control Panel. I can open anything else in CP except printer folder. It crashes CP.

This is Windows 2000 Pro networked. Printer is local to wife's PC

Any help whatsoever is appreciated....

Go in to the device manager under system properties and remove the drivers for the printer. This should hopefully allow you to get into the printer control panel. I've run into spooler problems with Win2K more times than I can remember, particularly if the printer is USB. HP seems to be the most prone to doing this. I attribute it to a drivers issue as HP won't even get thier printers to work in Vista.

Got a $200 Laser Printer that's worthless.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm on my way to give this a try I'm going to try reinstalling the drivers and hopefully get it running again. They've been using this printer for 5 years and this is the first time it's happened. But you hit the nail on the head, it's an HP USB printer.....

Found the problem. When I tried to uninstall drivers for the ECP port, it also froze. So on a whim I tried disconnecting the printer before a reboot. When I rebooted without the printer connected, Windows found a print job jammed in the spooler. After that, everything was hunky dory. #-o
