I was asked to back up a HD on a laptop. Unfortunately, it won't boot. So I took the HD out and hooked it up to a IDE USB adapter. I can get it to show up on my desktop just fine, but I run into a problem.

It tells me I don't have enough permission to access the My Document's folder. Is there a way I can get access to it so I can back up the documents and stuff?

Basically, how do I grant myself permissions?

The HD in the laptop has XP Pro for an OS.

The Desktop has Vista 64 Ultimate for a OS.

I think you'll have to go into the advanced properties of the directory and take ownership.
I've done this before, and when I installed the drive back into the original machine, I had to go in and "re-take" ownership to make it work.

You run the risk of screwing up the permissions ... but if it won't boot already, all that matters is that you get the files anyway .. right?

Right click the folder > "sharing and security" > select "security > click "advanced" > select "permissions" and there should be a box to replace permissions that you can select

at least on XP pro thats the steps.
