Small TabletPC

A cousin of mine is looking for a cheap-ish touch screen tablet pc that is solid-state in design. So ideally, only passive cooling and if he needs to put a SSD in himself, I'm sure he is capable. He wants to mount it in his prop-plane to sync with his GPS.

Any insight or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

It's the cheapish part that's somewhat difficult. How big a tablet is he looking at? For ultra-portables, there are several "nettablets" coming out soon, but minimum is $500~600 for a fairly underpowered machine. Still, that's quite a discount from the $1,500 or so companies used to charge for almost equally underpowered models (normally Intel ULV processors).

For 12" or higher models, HP has a pretty decent and inexpensive model. Relatively decent specs, too (dual-core Turion, I think). With the dollars-off coupon HP often has, you can get one for less than $700. It's not SSD, but you can easily install that yourself.

You can get info on several models to consider here:

There are a few models coming from China that are fairly inexpensive, but they run customized versions of Linux so I'm not sure how that would work with GPS Syncing software. Another thing to consider, there are some models that have built-in GPS.
