Problems Booting My System...

Post by NAiLs »

Ever since I installed Windows 7 Professional on my machine, I'm having problems. While my system is booting, I get the following error message:

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

Now, from my understanding, that can mean a couple things:
- Loose cable
- Improper boot device priority
- Jumper Pins

Well, I've got 2x Seagate SATA HDD's, so there are no Jumper Pins to set. I've also got a 36GB Raptor HDD that my Windows 7 is installed on. Previously my Vista installation was on one of my Seagate HDD's, so I made sure that my Raptor HDD was the primary drive both physically and in the BIOS. The raptors don't have any jumper pins that you can play with either. I've also verified the cables are tight on both ends. Again, the BIOS says my Raptor drive is the primary drive and the first booting device.

I'm stumped... The only way I can get this drive to boot on its own, is to press F8 on the POST, and choose my boot device from a list of devices.

Any suggestions??

Try disconnecting the 2 seagates and boot.

if that doesn't work, only thing i could think of would be reinstall, that ordinarily fixes boot issues like that(last resort of course, and i know you don't have any documents on the raptor so it'd be pretty painless, and if you do, get a unix liveCD and and a flash drive)

I completely forgot that I wanted to disconnect those drives to test... thanks for the reminder. I will let you guys know the outcome a bit later this afternoon. :)

I've had exactly the same problem installing Win7, it took about 5 tries to install until the message didn't appear anymore.

You said you *had* vista on one of the seagate drives? I wonder if the MBR (Master Boot Record) on that drive still has part of the vista loader and its confusing your BIOS.

Does your BIOS actually differentiate from your HDD's? Or does it just have "Internal HDD" in boot device priority? Who's your mobo/PC manufacturer?

Sorry, I've been a bum and haven't had time to play with this like I thought. Yeah, the BIOS knows what HDD is what. As far as the MBR, that drive isn't even set as a bootable device, unless forced, so I don't know how that would cause problems??

ruselrones - F8 is an option to press after the system has detected the drives. When I press F8 initially, it gives me the option to choose my boot device. I've never had a virus (since 1999) and the only files I deleted, were the files in the Windows.old folder. Those files were non-essential.
