Iphones in the US

A friend of mine is going to the US for a holiday and is also trying to find out how much it would cost to buy an Iphone outright while over there. Any rough estimations?

Sorry. Can't buy one without a plan unless he goes eBay or something. By the way, MSRP for iPhone 3GS 32GB is $799.
