so i have a Dell Latitude D620 14.1" 1.6GHz laptop currently keeping it around as a streaming netflix/hulu machine, and im having problems getting it online, it used to work fine, now it refuses to register an ip address and just hangs and says " Network cannot register ip for this computer contact your administrator, i've tried reinstalling the drivers, plugging the laptop directly into the cable modem instead of from a network switch, no dice.

any help would be appreciated

Are you setup for DHCP or a static IP? Have you tried a wireless or only wired connection? I'm assuming you tried a new cable (since you went straight into the modem). Try uninstalling the card via device manager rebooting and then installing the drivers again.

I have a D Link that acts funny if to many wireless connections are enabled. I have to reboot the router to get things to work again. I know it sounds kind of stupid but trying upluging the router for 10 seconds.

I've been looking for a new router but waiting to get a solid N.

Well this could be a local IP problem which you may be able to fix by manually assigning an IP. I have done this before (in Vista) but I'll be screwed if I can remember how.

Wed all assume that you have attempted to assign the IP manually? Its the first thing i do that way the ports are forwarded to me.

1. CLick local area connection status
2. Click Properties
3. Scroll down to internet protocol Version 4
4. Select it Hit properties
5. Use the following Ip adress, and enter your defualt gateway Subnet mask and the IP you would like.

This is jsut assumign you hyavnt tried this all ready

Also, try ipconfig /flushdns after ipconfig /release.

i tried assigning static ip along with dns and gateway, it says its connected now, but it still does not receive any packets

on another note, i did drop the laptop on the hardwood floor(it slid off my lap bcuz of a cord that got caught) broke some plastic around the battery which i did not have in

okay, evidently, the network switch was tweaking out on me and just not assigning ips or other settings itself, so i just turned it and the modem on and off repeatedly until the switch was showing a connection for each cable that was actually plugged in, trial and error is my friend.

I now it's lame but I am going to go ahead and quote myself on the fix.
