IDE RAID?

Post by shamrok3 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 5:57 am

Alrighty. I'm looking to get my STUPID old Pentium 4 up and folding for Team 38296. Specs: (Basically the best I could scrape up, and the mobo supports) 2.53GHz Pentium 4, ELSA Gladiac Ultra AGP 64Mb (nVidia) GFX, 512Mb DDR, ASUS P4VP-MX mobo, CNET Wireless 'G' card, 1 40GB Western Digital IDE, 1 80GB Western Digital (As far as I can tell, they're exactly the same, except for size). So, basically I'm looking for a Linux that will work on this PC and yield the best results for folding. I've tried installing an old Ubuntu, but it doesn't seem to work once I install and stop using the live CD. I can't install XP, because I've lost my code for one and the other one seems to be corrupted. I assume that something such as ME or 98 would not yield great results. I'm also looking to run the HDDs in RAID 0 to improve performance. Unfortunately the mobo doesn't support RAID natively and I cant find any understandable methods for software RAID. Any help on either front would help as I'm rather confused as to why the Ubuntu is not working...

Raid won't make any difference to folding performance. In fact, the whole machine is old enough that it might not even be worth setting up to fold.

You'll have to run the standard folding client, and will be lucky to get 100ppd from it.

Ah well. It was worth a try. Only thing I might be able to use it for is AOE2 :). Any ideas on how to get RAID going, if possible anyway? Tried Mandriva Linux 2007 today, installed but PC couldn't find it, or didn't recognize it as an OS... I'm out of Linux CDs now that SUSE doesn't boot at all and Ubuntu has the same problem...
