I currently have PhysX enabled on my rig with SLI and i was wondering if i would be losing performance or causing the cards to run harder than they need to when having PhysX enable when i don't need it for most games.

Nah you wouldn't lose any performance..Shouldn't anyway. Mine don't run any hotter or harder with it enabled and Ive never disabled it.

Isn't there a mode that lets you dedicate one of the cards to PhysX only? Would that mean the card is just inactive during non-PhysX games?

Not JUST doing nothing.
My dedicated 9800 Physx card is happily burning up watts while doing nothing.
Cool.

Yep, when you're not using the same gpu's in SLI that is( ie, MY setup of GTX285's in SLI wont let me choose, but throw in my 9600GSO and it will let me choose as it's not the same series).. if the game uses SLI but not Phys, both cards will run fine. just means no Physx will be run on it.

so i guess that if i run a game that uses PhysX then one of my cards will be used as a dedicated PhysX card for that game in a way.

It's too bad there aren't any games that actually use PhysX affecting gameplay. I know there's CellFactor: Revolution, but apparently that doesn't work with Nvidia PhysX. So for now we're stuck with flashy effects, which are cool, but nothing game-changing. I loved the effects in Mirror's Edge. Too bad I couldn't use the cloth strategically.
