I'm about to give one of my old computers to my niece(7 it's her birthday today) and nephew(8). I've installed Spybot and ran the immunization, installed Spyware Blaster and ran it. Now I'm going through and manually adding entries to the hosts file. While this works effectively it is a bit time consuming. Is there a list of bad sites for kids floating around that I can download? Or if there is a nice piece of software that blocks bad sites, I'm open to suggestions. The good news is neither kid is that tech savvy to break the protection. They would just think that it didn't work.

I've not used it personally, but if you sign up for an account with open DNS, and then set the computer to use the open DNS servers (set it in the network config pages), you can enable content filtering for whatever categories you want.

I use OpenDNS and it works quite well for filtering.

I have been thinking about using them too, although i dont see any real benefit to the paid one over the free one with the exception of whitelist only mode.

Now I wish that bill would've passed some years ago. It would've been easy to block all .xxx domains.

well if you get the $10 a year one, you can use the whitelist / blacklist feature......

I'm not looking to spend any money. I'm already giving them a PC. It will be up to my sister or brother in law to pick up software.

OpenDNS has worked for us for a few years now. It was good in the beginning, but sometimes a bad sight may get through. Now, it's been a rare occurrence that one does get through. Things have gotten better with their filtering.

This the free version or are you paying for the software?
