For a desktop, I would recommend building your own. It's pretty easy if you read online and use the instruction manual. Not only can you get a much more powerful machine for significantly less money, you usually feel a lot more pride of ownership in something you put together yourself. Check
www.newegg.com and various other computer retailers for prices.

Building your own is the best solution. The best sites to use for parts are geek.com, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, and zipzoomfly.com. It might seem difficult to you right now, but honestly putting the computer together is easier then figuring out what parts are compatible with one another. Finding out what is compatible just takes some basic reading. Its more or less just a matching game.

Building your own is definatly better by far! I was going to get the rig i have pre-built for like £1000 and then built it myself for £800 and yes as Raraniel said the pride of knowing you built it yourself just makes you feel so good, if it works that is.
Check my sig and you will see my build and also check page 25 of the post your rig post and you will see my rig there!

Post your max budget and I'm sure a few of us can help you out.
Also include what games you want it to run and general use requirements.
