I have a computer that was given to my friend to fix. He doesn't know what he's doing so somehow I ended up with it. They guy's computer has a Pentium 4 631 with 1GB of RAM. He ordered a Wolfdale E7500 (I updated the BIOS and the board supports it) and 4GB of RAM.

My question is what heatsink would be better? I know that Intel was aware of the heat output on their P4 line and this may be the better HSF. Or should I just put on the one that's coming with the new CPU? I guess if I needed to I could always check out the amperage ratings on the installed fans and mix and match with the better (more copper/maybe taller) heatsink too.

Thoughts?

Big question, whats he going to be doing with the computer?
If he's not going to OC or push the system most any HSF will do but, if he's going to push the system at all then I'd say use an aftermarket HSF!
I have a Zalman on one of my systems and they work great and are quiet also!
This should do fine with either of those CPU's!

No overclocking, just looking at using the "better" heatsink here.

The P4 cooler should have better performace, but it might be at the cost of noise.
You'll have to test and see. The cooler that comes with the new chip isn't very big at all.

Moot point as of right now. However, the P4 had the beefier heatsink and higher amp fan (surprise). I guess I clicked the wrong bookmark and looked at the CPU compatibility for my motherboard. His is not supported so I guess he'll have to buy a new one.
